Abstract

259,085. Marks, E. C. R., (Bates Valve Bag Co.). Jan. 20, 1926. Packing pulverulent material into bags or cartons.-Flour &c. falls from a bin or conveyer into a vertical rectangular feed shoot 16, Fig. 4, and is packed in a receptacle on a support 33 by the action of vertically reciprocating members 25, Figs. 4 and 5. Each number comprises a bar 26 with a strengthening rib 32 and carrying a series of wedge-shaped members 27 in spaced relation. The rear wall of each member is flush with the back of the bar 26 and in contact with a wall of the shoot 16, and the side faces 28 abut against wardly and inwardly and meet the lower or packthe side walls. The inner faces 30 slope downing faces 31 at an abrupt angle. The bars are reciprocated in opposite directions until the receptacle is filled and are then automatically stopped with the members 27 opposite and close to each other so that no material can escape while the receptacle is removed and another substituted. The receptacle rests on a table 33 mounted on a. vertically slidable rod 34 normally urged upwards by the action of a weight 45 on a chain 44. The chain co-operates with a sprocket 43 fast with a sprocket 41, the chain 39 of which is attached to a cross-bar 36 on the rod 34. In use, the operator raises the weight, and consequently lowers the table, by depressing a pedal 48. A receptacle is then placed in position and the pedal released to allow the weight to raise the receptacle so that it embraces the shoot 16. The filling operation is then started by the action of a stud 67 on the rod 34 upon a bar 63 connected with the clutch-release mechanism of the feed members. When filling is complete, a projection 58 on the rod 34 engages a cam-surface 53 adjustably arranged on a link 49 and presses it to the left to allow the bar 63 to fall and stop the feed. The position of the cam 53 can be adjusted by rotating a hand-wheel 57, so that receptacle of different sizes can be dealt with.
