This invention relates more especially to packaging machines in which cartons in a collapsed condition are fed one by one from a source of supply to a conveyor which pre- & sents said cartons to a succession of mechanisms whereby said cartons are set up;
charged, closed, and stacked.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved constructlon for machines of this character-whereby certain desired operations connected with the preparation, charging and closing of cartons, may be preformed in an improved manner in connection with a substantially continuous supply of the articles'to be packaged for distribution.
Another object of invention an improved construction, combination, and arrangement of parts in each of said mechanisms which are thereby adapted to cooperate with the carton-conveyor during successive periods of rest.

The present application constitutes in part, a continuation of my copending application Serial Number 6765, filed February 4, 1925.
For convenience in description, the drawings will be more particularly referred to in connection with the several mechanisms which are arranged to cooperate with the carton-conveyor of said conveyor.
T able operating mechanism.
Referring more especially to Figures 1, 2, 2, and 3 of the drawings, a lower plate 1 which is carried by uprights 2, is provided with an opening 3 for the accommodation of a bearing 4 carried by an integrally-formed plate 5, said plate 5 being secured to the plate 1 around the edge of opening 3 by means of bolts 6. A power shaft 7 which is journalled in a bearing 8 carried by a pedestal 9 mounted upon the plate 1, has keyed thereto a bevel pinion 10 which meshes with a bevel gear 11 keyed to a vertical cam shaft 12, the lower end of said cam shaft being journalled in the bearing 4. The upper end of the bearing 4 is provided with a thrust bearing plate 13 between which and an upper bearing plate 14 are arranged suitable ball bearings 15. It will be seen from Figure 2 that the bevel gear 11 is provided with a hub 16 by means of which the end thrust on bevel gear 11 may be taken by the bearing plate 14. The upper end of the cam shaft 12 is journalled in a bearing 17 carried by an upper plate or table 18 which is mounted upon the 'uprights 2. Keyed to the upper end of the cam shaft 12, as shown in Figure 3, is a spur gear 19 which meshes with a second s ur gear 20 journalled upon a stud 21 three ed into the top plate 18. Threaded into the spur gear 20 near the periphery thereof is a stud 22 on which is plvotally mounted one end of a link 23, the other end .of said link being pivotally connected to a stud .24 carried by a lever arm 25which swings about a stud 26 mounted in thetop plate 18. The bifurcated outer end 27 of lever arm 25 engages a roller 28 journalled on a stud 29, said stud being threaded into an inwardly-presented protuberance 30 of an oscillatory ring 31. As

For this purpose, a cylindrical frame 33 which forms a part of the carton conveyor, is provided with an outwardly-presented flange 34 which is slidably mounted in an inwardlypresented'groove in the upper portion of stationary frame 32, said carton conveyor being thereby supported independently of ring 31 so as not to interfere with'the latters reverse movements. Adjacent its lower edge, the traveling frame 33 is provided with a. plurality of inset dog and ratchet blocks 35 (see Figure which, as shown clearly in Figures 9, 23, and 27, are provided with upper rectangular recesses 36 and lower acuteangled recesses 37. Each of said rectangular recesses 36 is adapted to receive the squared outer end 38 of a locking dog 39 which, as shown in Figure 3, is pivotally mounted upon a stud 40 and yieldably held in locking engagement with the recess 37 by means of a spring 41. Each of the lower recesses 37 is adapted to receive a ratchet pawl 42 which is pivotally mounted upon a stud 43 carried by the ring 31. Said pawl is pressed outwardly by means of a leaf spring 44 so that during clockwise movements of the drive ring 31, the cylindrical frame or support 33 is made to partake of its movement whereas during the counter-clockwise movements of ring 31, the ratchet pawl 42 will be dragged from the lower recess 38 and after sliding along the inner wall of frame 33, will drop into the next recess 38 in the lower series. At the end of each counter-clockwise movement, of the drive ring 31, a pin 46 carried thereby, will be thrown into engagement with an inclined surface near the outer end of locking dog 39, for displacing said dog from rectangular recess 37 and thus rcleasing the cylindrical support 33 to partake of the next clockwise movement of the ring 31, which thus imparts a clockwise movement to the carton conveyor. Referring now to Figures 2, 5 and 6, it will be seen that the traveling frame or support ,33 is surmounted by a rigid castellated frame or structure including raised carton-carrying platesor tables 50 which are circumferentially interposed between depressed portions 51 of the structure and integrally connected thereto by spaced uprights 52 (see Fi ure 27). Presented in opposite directions rom the uprights 52 are lugs 53 which carry suitable pivots 54 for carton-gripping levers, each of said levers comprising a gripperarm 55 provided with an elongated clamping jaw 56 and a lever arm 57 provided with an anti-fraction roller 58. These gripping levers in their separated positions areadapted to receive between them, a collapsed car: ton and afterwards by the inward move ment of one of them, to press upon the lateral edges of the collapsed carton and in conjunction with a plunger anvil to be hereinafter referred to, to open and set up said carton. According to the preferred embodiment of my invention shown on the drawings said carton is provided with flaps at both ends, the carton-conveyor being adapted to receive the cartons from a hopper containing a stack of collapsed cartons for presenting them one by one in successive positions to have the flaps at one end closed, next to receive a circular thru its unclosed end, then to have poultices or articles of like nature introduced into the open end thereof. next, to have the flaps at the other end closed, and finally to be removed from the carton-conveyor and stacked.
Carton-feeding mechanism.
As shown in Figure 2, a hopper 59 is arranged at some distance above the upper plate 18 and presented inwardly from a triangular bracket 60 which is secured to the table 18 by means of bolts 61. As shown in Figure 5, said hopper is arranged to discharge on to the raised tables 50 of the carton-conveyor. For this. purpose, said hopper is provided with laterally-spaced bottom plates 62 extending along opposite bottom edges thereof, a rectangular corner block 63 which is rigidly secured to a vertical plate 64 by screws 65, being extended together with the plates 62 to form suitable guides for a carton-feeding slide. Thus, as shown best in Figure 7, the plates 62 constitute oppositely presented guides for the slide which comprises a lower rabbeted plate 66, an upper plate 67 rivetedthereto, and a bifurcated bracket 68 which carries a pin 69. Upon this pin, as-shown' in Figure 5, is journalled' a roller 70 which operates in the slotted upper end 71 of a lever arm '72 keyed to an oscillatory shaft 73, said shaft being mounted in bearings 74. A downwardly- .presented lever arm 75 provided with a double bifurcated lower end 75 is keyed to the other end of shaft 73 and Inovably engages rollers 76 journalled on oppositelypresented pins 76 on a block 77 which is carried by a reciprocatory cam rod 78." The outer end of said cam rod 78 is reciprocably mounted in a, guide 79, (see Figures 5 and 32), its widened inner end being provided with a slot 80 within which slides a guide block 81, said guide block beingmounted on the cam shaft 12. As shown in Figures 2 and 5, the widened inner end of the cam rod 78 is slidably supported by the flat upper surface of a cam 82 which is keyed to the cam shaft 12 and provided with an upwardly presented cam slot 83 within WhlCh runs a cam roller 8% journalled upon a stud 85,
said studdepending from the under side of each recurrence of this operation, one of the box-gripping lever arms is moved toward the right according to Figure 6 to permit the introduction of a collapsed box thereover on to one of the raised tables 50. .Means for imparting this movement to said gripper arm may be provided as follows. Mounted on the lever arm 72 is a supporting guide 72 which carries a pusher 86 which is connected theretoby adjustable connections 87. As the lever arm 72 moves toward the left according to Figure5, the pusher 86 comes into engagement with a roller 88 journalled in the outer end of one arm 89 of a bellcrank lever which is pivotally mounted on a stud bolt 90 threaded into an adjacent Wall of the bracket 60. The other arm 91 of said lever carries a pad at its outer end which bears against a roller 92 journalled in the power arm-57 of the right-hand gripping, lever according to Figures 5 and 6. This operation serves to move said lever into the position shown in Figure 6, a coil spring 93 operating to return the lever 89, 91, to its initial position shown in Figure 5 as soon as the carton-feeding slide is retracted for a new operation, whereupon the spring 55 operating upon gripper arm 55, returns said gripper arm to normal position as shown in Figure 5.
