Abstract

258,881. TÚcalÚmit, Ltd., (Assignees of Soc. Anon. des Etablissements TÚcalÚmit). Sept. 22, 1925, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Pumps with two or more barrels in series; relief devices.-A lubricat.ing system for a motorvehicle chassis comprises a pump supplying lubricant at low pressure to a branched conduit system, means being provided adjacent the part to be lubricated for discharging the lubricant thereto at increased pressure and in regulated quantities. The pump 6, Fig. 2 draws lubricant from a reservoir 1 past a non-return valve 4 and discharges it past a non return valve 8 into the conduit 22. The piston comprises cup-leathers 10 held between the parts 9. 9<1> of a rod, the lower part 9<1> being formed as a valve to close a passage 5<a> between the valves 4, R when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke. The discharge pressure is controlled hv a spring-pressed relief valve 15 interposed between conduits 19, 21 connected to the conduit 22 and the reservoir respectively. A pressure gauge 20 is connected to the conduit 19. The valve 15 is formed on a rod 14 to the end of which is pivoted a lever 12, one end of which engages a ramp 17. In the inoperative position shown, the lever is in engagement with the top of the ramp and with a knob 11 on the rod 9, thereby holding the valve 15 open and maintaining the piston at the bottom of its stroke. To free the pump, the lever 12 is turned about the axis of the rod 14 so that it moves off the top of the ramp and disengages the knob 11, allowing the valve 15 to close. The reservoir and pump are arranged on the dashboard of the vehicle. Each pressure intensifier comprises a cylinder 26, Fig. 3, connected to a branch 25 from the conduit system and screwed to a member 32 which is secured to the part to be lubricated by a member 33 passing through the member 32. The high-pressure piston 28 of a differential piston is slidable in a passage 32<1> in the member 32, while the low pressure piston, which is slidable in the cylinder 26, comprises a cupleather 27 held between a collar 28<1> on the piston 28 and a member 29 screwed thereon. The members 28, 29 are hollow and in communication with the conduit 25 through a passage 29<2> fitted with a non return-valve 30. The member 33 is provided with a passage 33<1> communicating with the passage 32<1>, a spring-pressed valve 34 being fitted at the outlet from the passage 33<1>. In operation, lubricant supplied by the pump at low pressure first fills the passages 32<1>, 33<1> and the chambers in the members 28, 29 and then moves the differential piston against the action of a spring 37, whereby lubricant is discharged at increased pressure past the valve 34, the valve 30 being closed during this operation. The amount of lubricant discharged is determined by the stroke of the differential piston. When the lever 12 is returned to the inoperative position, thereby causing the valve 15 to open, the spring 37 returns the differential piston to its original position.
