Abstract

A protective sleeve to be fitted over plastic pipework 2B comprises a hollow plastic pipe 4 of larger diameter than the plastic pipework over which it is to be fitted. The outer surface of the plastic pipe having a layer of fiberglass 6 secured to it, the fiberglass being coated or impregnated with an intumescent material. The fiberglass layer can have a thickness of about 4mm, and the plastic pipe can also have a wall thickness of about 4mm. Plastic pipework to which the sleeve can be fitted can comprise a pipe with a wall thickness of about 4mm.

Description

Protecting sleeve for pipework
Field of invention
The present invention relates a protecting sleeve for pipework. More especially the invention relates to a sleeve for protecting large pipework, the sleeve including a fibreglass layer.
Background to the invention
It is common practice to coat large plastic pipework with an intumescent coating to provide some protection to the
pipework in the event of fire and to stop the fire
spreading along the pipework and through wall or floor
apertures through which the pipework extends
For the intumescent layer to provide the desired
protection, the structural integrity of the pipework must remain in place for a sufficient period of time to allow the intumescent material to expand.
Up until fairly recently, standard plastic pipework with a diameter of up to 250mm had a wall thickness of approximately 8 to 10mm. Pipework with a diameter of over 250mm would typically have a thickness of 18 to 23mm.
However, new ventilated pipework on the market have wall thicknesses of typically around 4 mm. Extensive tests by the applicant have found that a plastic wall of only 4mm thickness melts rapidly and does retain its structural integrity long enough for the intumescent material to take effect.
The applicant has therefore sought ways to preserve the structural integrity of pipework of 4mm thickness long enough for the intumescent layer to expand and stop the fire spreading.
The present invention seeks to provide a solution to the problem with new pipework of reduced thickness by providing a protective sleeve to fit over and around the pipework.
Statement of invention
According to a first embodiment of the invention there is provided a protective sleeve to be fitted over plastic pipework, the sleeve comprising a hollow plastic pipe of larger diameter than the plastic pipework over which it is to be fitted, the outer surface of the plastic pipe having a layer of fibreglass secured thereto, the fibreglass being coated or impregnated with an intumescent material.
Preferably, the plastic pipe has a wall thickness of around 4mm.
Preferably the fibreglass layer has a wall thickness of around 4mm.
Brief description of the drawings
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying figures in which:3
Figure 1 is a plan view of circular pipe with a protective sleeve according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of a square cross-section pipe with a protective sleeve according to the invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments
Referring to figures, a protective for pipework 2 comprises a plastic pipe 4 with an outer layer of fibreglass
The pipe 4 is made from PVC or similar plastics material and has wall thickness of around 4mm (a thickness that has become conventional in ventilation pipework). The pipe 4 is shown in the figures as having a circular cross section. It can though be of any suitable cross-sectional shape .
The fibre glass layer around 4mm in thickness and is coated, otherwise impregnated with an intumescent material.
The fibre glass 6 is adhered or otherwise secured or fixed to the outer surface of the pipe 4. The adhesive may be an intumescent adhesive such as one marketed and distributed by the applicant, and the coating may be an intumescent paint or liquid coating, such as one marketed and distributed by the applicant.
Figure 1 shows the sleeve fitted over ventilation pipework
2A having a square cross section.
Figure 2 shows the fitted over a ventilation pipework 2B having a circular cross section. The ventilation pipework 2 could though be of any cross-sectional shape and dimension suitable to receive a protective sleeve.
In the event of a fire, the inner pipework 2 rapidly melts losing all its structural integrity.
However, during this time the structural integrity of the outer pipe 4 is maintained, due to it having the fibreglass layer 6, for sufficient time to allow the intumescent material to expand.
As the outer pipe 4 softens and melts, the expansion of the intumescent material crushes the fibreglass 6 in on itself to close the hole in the floor or wall through which the pipework 2 extends thereby stopping the spread of the fire along the pipework and through the apertures into neighbouring areas.
It will be understood, that the various embodiments described herein have been described by way of example only and that modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
