Abstract

257,086. Switchgear & Cowans, Ltd., and Neep, G. H. Aug. 8, 1925. Cut-out arrangements. - Relates to arrangements comprising master switches and main switches for controlling under safe conditions apparatus such as the motors of portable coalcutting machines, where the main switches Y, Z are situated in a gate-end box 2 and the master switch V is situated close to the motor 34. According to the invention, relays 3, 4 one of which is energized when the master switch is moved to its first position 35 or 36, make a connection back through the trailing cable 37, which allows another relay 33 to be energized by moving the master switch to its second position 39 or 40 the relay 33 completing a local circuit at the gate-end whereby the main switch closing coils Y or Z are finally energized. The closure of the main switch is thus made contingent upon continuity of the main and earthing conductors in the cable 37. Overload and leakage protection is provided by series and balance coils 28, 29, 30. In the arrangement shown, the relays 3, 4 serve to select the direction of running. Alternatively, two or more relays acting in a similar manner may be employed to switch current to a motor in stages or to a number of machines in desired order. Specification 209,831 is referred to.
