Abstract

Controllers, interlocking.- In rheostats for use in connection with motor starters in which the resistance elements are rotated to vary the resistance the elements are cooled by a medium, preferably oil or water, which is agitated by propellers rotated on moving the resistance elements. In the arrangements shown the resistance elements are wound on insulating cylinders along which contact rings are moved as described in Specifi. cation 242,807, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting but devices such as that described in Specification 19604/00, [Class 37, Electricity. Measuring &c.], may also be employed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the cylinders L carrying the resistance elements are arranged around a spindle Z from which they are rotated by gears T, U and which carries propellers DD. The starting switch EE may be closed by a rod actuated by the contact rings when these are at the top of the cylinders L so that it can only be closed when the whole resistance is in circuit, being thereafter held .m electromagnetically. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 three cylinders L are carried by a single spindle Z which also carries the propellers DD. Fixed rings A connect metal bands HH on the cylinders connected to the ends of resistance wires to conductors JJ while the moving contact rings A<1> slide on a conduct rod LL. A nut NN on the spindle Z actuates interlocking gear through a rod SS or may operate an interlocking switch directly. If water is used as the cooling medium it may be covered with a layer of oil.
