Abstract
241,230. Buchholz, M. Oct. 11, 1924, [Convention date]. Protective arrangements.-An arc produced by excess voltage between a conductor c and an earthed conductor a is quenched by moving the conductors c, a relatively to each other in such a manner that the position of shortest distance between the conductors varies and the arc is thereby compelled to move along through the insulating medium in which the conductors are immersed. The conductor a may, for example, be a helix wound on a rotatable cylinder b. Fig. 2 shows a device in which the drum b is continuously rotated. The rotation of the drum here also causes by centrifugal action the circulation of oil through a filter i and the production of arcquenching jets of oil from holes m. A governor n moves the conductor c away from the drum should the speed fall off. The amount and nature of the arcing may also be ascertained by collecting the gases of decomposition in a receptacle o in which is a contact device r which operates at each arc or spark. According to modifications the bar mav rotate round the helix. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the provision of a weight w, Fig. 7, (Cancelled), for rotating the cylinder b, so long as an arc continues, an elec. tromagnetically controlled pawl and ratchet device s, t stopping the rotation when the arc is quenched. Modifications are also described in which there are two helices, in which the bar rotates about its own axis, in which the bar and helix are corrugated, and in which the conductors are hollow and oil cooled. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
