Abstract

256,157. Hessel, I. March 30, 1926. Violins &c. with internal resonating strings and coils ; sound-posts; tuning- pins an straining- elements; tail-pieces. -A violin &c. having an internal resonator device 15 responsive tc the vibrations produced by the strings, has also a pair of sound-posts 28 movable into or out of contact with the back 12 to vary the resonance. The resonator device may comprise the several lengths 17 of a single coil-spring mounted in a frame, or separate coil-springs of different diameters, or strings. The sound-posts 28 are pivoted to the resonator frame and are connected by a spring which frictionally retains them but permits their separate movement. A rotary damper may operate selectively on the different resonating-lengtbs 17, and comprises a shaped head 22 with peripheral strand 23 of wool, turned by a nut 21. The tonal qualities of the instrument may be further varied by varying the tension of the strings by a screw 32 mounted in the tail-piece and capable of engagement with the belly 11.
