Abstract

Vacuum tubes. - The anode of a thermionic valve or othar discharge tube consists of a seamless, hollow, cylindrical body 1 of nickel plastically formed into shape. Any process such as drawing, extruding, or spinning in which the metal is caused to flow cold, is suitable. The open end 3 of the anode is flared, and the inside of the flare is roughened and coated with copper to facilitate sealing to a glass wall 2. Intimate contact between the copper coating and nickel mav be obtained by heating in hydrogen to cause alloying of the metals. A nickel ring 4 is silver soldered to the anode and serves as a retaining collar for mounting the anode in a cooling casing. The anode may be vacuum fired to expel occluded gas. The cathode 6 and grid 7 are mounted on a re-entrant tube 10.
