254,249. Eck, J. van. Sept. 22, 1925, [Convention date]. Sliding-jaw wrenches. -In an open jaw wrench of the kind having one jaw hinged to the handle and the other jaw slidably mounted relative thereto and connected to the handle by a rod of adjustable length, the jaws are mounted in an inclined position relative to the axis of the handle so that the hinged jaw is nearer the free end of the handle than the other jaw and its pivot nearer the free end of the handle than the connection between the slidable jaw and the adjustable rod, and abutments are provided on both sides of the pivot for the hinged jaw. The jaw 2 is pivoted at 3 to the handle 1 and the jaw I which slides in a guideway in the jaw 2 is connected at 5 to a rod 6 adjustable by a nut 7 and pressed inwards by a spring 10. Abutment surfaces 13, 14 are provided on both sides of the handle. When the handle is moved to the left the resistance of the nut causes it to pivot about the pivot 3, so that the pull on the rod 6 closes the jaw 4 tightly on the nut. Movement of the handle in the reverse direction causes the jaws to open and slip round the corners of the nut. The jaws may be curved and serrated for gripping pipes.
