Abstract
254,004. Levy, F. March 25, 1925. Emulsions. making.-An emulsion in water of bitumen and india-rubber is prepared by adding to bituminous material undergoing emulsification a solution or an aqueous suspension of indiarubber. The bitumen may be emulsified by any of the processes described in Specifications 202 021, 230,177. 233,430. 233,784, and 236.641. and the india-rubber may be added as an aqueous suspension of vulcanized india-rubber, as a volatile-solvent solution of unvulcanized india-rubber, or as rubber latex: the latex may be vulcanized in situ. One example describes the addition of rubber latex to Mexican asphalt undergoing emulsification, and another example, describes the vulcanization of the latex in situ with the use of diphenylguanidine as accelerator. An emulsion comprising dispersed bitumen and indiarubber may be treated as described in Specifiction 251,323 to produce an emulsion in which the bitumen and the india-rubber form the continuous phase. The products may be used in road-making or for preserving, impregnating, or waterproofing purposes, or they may be mixed with stone or other mineral aggregate and the mixture consolidated by pressure. Alternatively, the emulsion may be broken down, as by adding an electrolyte, to yield a plastic product. Reclaimed rubber in solution may be incorporated and fillers added at any stage of the process.
