Abstract
253,344. Metal Traders Technical, Ltd., (Metallbank und Metallurgische Ges. Akt.-Ges.). May 21, 1925. Sulphuric acid. - Gases containing sulphur dioxide are charged with the maximum quantity of nitrogen oxides by intimately mixing them with sulphuric acid containing nitrogen oxygen compounds, and the sulphuric acid which is produced in the gases is precipitated free or substantially free from nitrogen oxides by means of an electrostatic field. The residual gases are allowed to react further if necessary and the remaining sulphur dioxide is rapidly worked up owing to the quantity of nitrogen oxides present. The sulphuric acid is again separated free from nitrogen oxides by means of an electrostatic field. In a modification, 'the sulphuric acid is precipitated by means of a device for effecting intimate mixing of gases and liquids such as that described in Specification 149,647, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.], but in this case in order to prevent condensation of nitrogen oxides the acid is not allowed to rise above 54‹ B. and increased temperatures may have to be employed. In a further modification, gases containing sulphur dioxide are strongly charged with nitrogen oxides, for example by means of nitrosyl sulphuric acid of 58‹ B. as described in Specification 149,648 and are then treated with water in a reaction chamber or tower in regulated quanti. ties to prevent the concentration of the condensed acid from rising above 54‹ B. Preferably the gases and acid liquor pass down the tower. which may be packed or empty in the same direction so that the gas is in contact with the more dilute acid for most of the time. The water may be added in the form of a spray or as steam or as dilute acid. Specification 187,016 also is referred to.
