253,117. United Shoe Machinery Corporation, (Assignees of La Chapelle, F. N.). June 4, 1925, [Convention date]. Nails. - Articles, particularly shoes or shoe components, have their parts connected by, or are pegged with, non-metallic fastenings in the form of pegs. The pegs are cut from a length of peg stock of a felted fibrous material, in particular paper twine, which may be stiffened by various impregnating agents. The pegs are cut and driven by machine, may be softened prior to driving, and may be headed or clinched at one or both ends during driving by cutting the peg a little longer than the hole it is to fill, and correspondingly extending the stroke of the driver. The paper twine may be prepared by impregnating a strip of paper with sizing material, twisting the strip, and then giving the twisted twine a supplemental coating of a sizing material, which may be of water-soluble glue or of water-resisting casein, glue, or shellac. soluble in alcohol. In Fig. 1, a paper peg 30 of cylindrical form is shown in use attaching a leather top lift 32 to a wooden heel 34. In Fig. 2, a peg 36 securing a lasted upper leather 38 to an insole 40 is shown headed at both ends.
