Abstract
253,100. Standard Motor Construction Co., (Assignees of Smith, B. C.). June 3. 1925, [Convention date]. Starting.-A four-stroke Diesel or like engine has mechanically actuated valves for atmospheric air, liquid fuel, compressed air for starting, and exhaust, the valves being actuated by cams on a shaft movable axially for starting and normal running in the forward or reverse directions. When the cam shaft is moved from a neutral position to the first starting position,' the compressed-air valve opens on each outstroke of the piston, and the exhaust valve on each instroke; in the second starting position,' the compressedair valve opens on each alternate outstroke, the atmospheric-air valve on each intermediate outstroke, and the exhaust valve on each instroke; in the running position,' the atmospheric-air valve opens on one outstroke, the fuel valve at about the end of the next instroke, and the exhaust valve on the following instroke. Corresponding positions on the other side of neutral give reverse starting and running. The compressedair valve 5 on each cylinder is connected to the cylinder by a passage 12 provided with a check valve, and is carried by a piston 14 connected by a rod 15 to a rocker actuated by the cam. A second piston 16 on the valve-stem causes the valve to be normally closed when the compressed air is turned on; on turning off the air, the valve drops by gravity into the open position, in which it is not actuated by the cam. In the running position ' of the cam shaft. before the compressedair supply is turned off, the valve 5 is actuated and compressed air is admitted whenever the pressure in the engine cylinder falls below that of the compressed air. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the invention to any four-stroke engine, and states that the ' second starting position ' may be omitted. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
