Abstract
252,703. Boerstler, E. W. May 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Light, treating diseases with.-The treatment of diseases with ultra-violet light is carried out by the use of an incandescent electric filament lamp worked on a voltage about 10 per cent above that applied for illuminating purposes, and having an envelope, for example of soda lead, soda lime, or borosilicate glass opaque to rays of wave length substantially below 300 millimicrons. The apparatus employed comprises an aluminium casing 4 containing a low-voltage tungsten or other filament lamp 14, an aluminium reflector 26, and a window 20 in which is inserted an applicator of quartz, borosilicate glass, or alum or copper sulphate solution contained in a glass tube. The lamp 14 is held in a socket 10 adjustably mounted in a boss 8 on the casing 4 and is connected by a flex 16 passing through the handle 18 of the apparatus with an alternating or direct-current supply. The reflector 26 is connected to a rod 28 adjustably mounted on a pillar 30 fixed to the casing 4. The applicator 24 bears against the lamp 12 at its inner end; the free end is placed in contact with the part to be treated; the sides are covered bv a cylindrical shield 34. When made of quartz the free end of the applicator may be turned back somewhat upon itself and may be provided with indentations to diffuse the rays.
