Abstract

252,462. Burke, A. E. O. Feb. 28, 1925. Returning sound-box to starting point; tonearms; tone-arm joints; sound-boxes and tonearms, balancing.-Relates to gramophones having a number of sound-boxes, one of which automatically repeats the playing of a record as soon as the reproduction by another sound-box has finished. According to the invention, two or more sound-boxes are mounted on the same or on separate axes at the end of a tone-arm, and are so arranged that they are moved simultaneously by the action of the record track upon the needle which for the time being is in action, one sound-box reaching the starting position as soon as sound reproduction by another has finished, and all the sound-boxes starting from the same side of the centre of the record and moving over approximately the same path. In the construction shown, three sound-boxes A. A', A<2> are carried by tubes C, C<1>, C<2> which are joined to a common sleeve D rotatable upon a hollow apertured spindle which is clamped within the end of a tone-arm F. The axis of the hollow spindle is slightly inclined, so that one reproducing needle only is in playing engagement with the record track at the same time. When one needle (e.g. the needle B) has reached the end of the track after playing the record, the needle of the next sound-box (B<1> in this case) has been moved into contact with the outer part of the track and then repeats the playing, the first needle (B) moving out of contact with the surface of the record. This action occurs repeatedly. The distances between the needles can be adjusted in accordance with the width of the soundgroove zone by rotating the sound-boxes on their axes in the supporting arms. The tone-arm F is mounted on a fixed sound-conduit H by a ball- and-socket joint F<1>. A forked lever K engaging the end of the tone-arm F and provided with weights K<2> for counterbalancing the sound-boxes and tone-arm is mounted on trunnions K<1>. The lever K mav be turned into engagement with clips L to hold the arm F and the sound-boxes raised. In a simplified construction involving only two sound-boxes, these are pivoted on separate inclined axes at the end of a tone-arm which is mounted on trunnions. The sound-boxes are linked together. This arrangement provides only for one automatic repetition of the sound reproduction.
