Description

A barbegue grill assembly
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a grilling assembly particularly well-suited to barbecues, that can be easily assembled and disassembled as required for cooking, cleaning and storage.
Background
Barbeque cooking is generally carried out by placing foodstuffs on a grilling grid above a heat source such as a gas flame, burning charcoal or similar. A typical grilling grid is a single or one-piece metal item, formed by casting or a similar process.
The combination of the cooking process, and the size and configuration of these grids, tends to make them difficult to clean. Juices from foodstuffs placed directly onto the grid burns and sticks to the grid as a carbonised residue. The one-piece grids are normally flat, and too long and wide to easily fit into a typical kitchen sink for soaking prior to cleaning.
Prior Art
Accordingly a number of patent applications have been filed in an attempt to resolve the problem or similar, including the following: W0201349657 describes and shows a portable cooking apparatus that has a plurality of panels temporarily coupled to each other and a plurality of rods. Each panel includes a top edge and a bottom edge. At least two of the plurality of panels each include a plurality of slits. Each slit of the plurality of slits extends from the top edge of a panel toward a bottom edge thereof. The plurality of rods removably extend between two panels of the plurality of panels, each rod of the plurality of rods being inserted into a first slit of the plurality of slits formed in one of the two panels and a second slit of the plurality of slits formed in another of the two panels.
US20110232503 describes and shows a grilling plate that has two main tubular members, two connecting rods and a plurality of supporting rods. Each connecting rod is respectively attached onto and through each end of two main tubular members and can be tightened by corresponding securing nuts. Both ends of each supporting rod are respectively and evenly connected to both main tubular members.
CN201617709 describes and shows a barbeque grill that comprises a grill disc and barbeque wire meshes. Two fastening grooves and associated supports are disposed on upright plates behind the grill disc, the width of the lower surfaces of the supports matched with the width of each fastening groove. Two sides of each of the supports are bent to form support plates with a plurality of inclined hanging grooves The simple structure means that the barbeque grill can be assembled quickly by inserting the support into the fastening grooves and placing the barbeque wire meshes into the hanging grooves. The barbeque grill can also be simply and easily disassembled.
In contrast the present invention provides a multi-part barbeque grill that can be easily assembled and disassembled as required for cooking, cleaning and storage, where each of the components is of simple and rugged construction, and each of which can be fifted together without difficulty.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a barbeque grill assembly, comprising: a front comb comprising a spine and a plurality of substantially parallel elongate teeth extending from one side of the spine at spaced intervals; and at least one side comb comprising a spine and a plurality of substantially parallel elongate teeth extending from one side of the spine at spaced intervals, in which the elongate teeth of each of the front and side combs are mutually configured in use such that the teeth interweave to form a grid when the front and side combs are releasably interlocked.
In some embodiments more than one side comb is comprised in the assembly.
Typically the combs are brought together with the teeth aligned substantially in the same plane. The combs may be brought together, or releasably interlocked in use, such that the teeth on the front comb extend at an angle to those on the side comb or combs.
Having combs that releasably interlock in this manner means that the grill can be easily disassembled for cleaning and storage.
More particularly, and advantageously the combs provide an easy to clean assembly, wherein preferably the combs and more particularly the assembly does not provide permanently welded or fused or bonded angles or corners; or more particularly does not feature angles formed of overlapping members to form a four-way coiner.
In an embodiment, the front comb preferably has a spine connection means at one end of the spine configured to connect the front comb, such as for example in series with a substantially similar comb. The spine connection means is preferably arranged to allow two or more combs to be connected in series or side-to-side to create an extended width grill.
In an embodiment, the spine connection means is preferably an end tab that extends from one end of the spine substantially parallel to the spine and having a connection surface substantially parallel to the elongate teeth. The end tab can overlap with a similar tab or other item having an opposed surface on an adjacent grill to connect the two together via a friction fit.
In an embodiment, first and second end tabs preferably extend from each end of the spine. Each of the tabs preferably have a connection surface extending substantially parallel to the elongate teeth. The connection surface on the first tab is preferably aligned in opposition to the connection surface on the second tab. Having tabs at each end in opposition to each other allows a number of substantially identical combs to be connected in series.
In an embodiment, the spines are substantially straight and the teeth extend from the spines substantially perpendicular to the spines. This allows a rectangular grid to be constructed simply and easily.
In an embodiment, the teeth on one of the front or side spines are straight, and the teeth on the other of the front or side spines are wavy. The straight teeth of a spine are preferably arranged in use to pass over and under the troughs and peaks of the wavy spine(s) when the spines are releasably interlocked. This configuration allows the straight teeth to be easily pushed through the wavy teeth to create an interweave on more than one level.
In an embodiment, the barbeque grill further comprises a rear comb comprising a spine and a plurality of substantially parallel elongate teeth extending from one side of the spine at spaced intervals. In use the rear comb is preferably located behind the front comb. The teeth on each of the front and rear combs may be configured to extend past each other and extending substantially to the spine of the other comb.
The rear comb preferably further comprises a pair of side arms located substantially one at each end of the rear spine and extending substantially parallel to the rear comb teeth, each end of the spine of the front comb and the ends of the side arms comprising mutual connection means to releasably connect the front and rear combs.
Using both front and rear combs means that the spines form front and rear sides to the grill, and this helps to ensure that the construction is sturdy.
In an embodiment, the connection means comprises interlocking tabs that extend from the ends of each of the arms and each end of the rear spine. This is a simple and effective construction that require no moving or removable parts, and which allows construction with flat surfaces and minimal corners so that cleaning is easier.
In an embodiment, the spines and the ends of the teeth are configured to overlap with an interference fit. This is a simple and effective construction that require no moving or removable parts, and which allows construction with flat surfaces and minimal corners so that cleaning is easier.
In an embodiment, the spines and the ends of the teeth are configured to have mutually opposed surfaces where they overlap. This is a simple and effective construction that require no moving or removable parts, and which allows construction with flat surfaces and minimal corners so that cleaning is easier.
In an embodiment, the at least one side comb is a pair of side combs, the teeth of the side combs configured to extend through and interweave with the teeth of the front comb from each side. Using combs on each side means that the spines form sides to the grill, and this helps to ensure that the construction is sturdy.
In an embodiment, the teeth of the side combs extend along common axes to form tooth pairs that extend the full width of the assembly. This means that the side-side teeth do not have to extend the full width of the grill, which is normally the largest dimension, so that when the grill is disassembled, each of the side combs is more likely to fit into a domestic kitchen sink.
In an embodiment, the end of each one of the tooth pairs has a mutual connection means to connect to the other one of the tooth pair. This allows the side comb teeth to connect to form a sturdier and more robust construction.
In an embodiment, the mutual connection means is tabs located on the ends of the teeth and having mutually opposed faces, the teeth configured so that the tabs have an interference overlap. This is a simple and effective construction that require no moving or removable parts, and which allows construction with flat surfaces and minimal corners so that cleaning is easier.
In an embodiment, the lengths of the teeth on each of the side combs are staggered along the length of each of the side combs. This makes threading the side combs into the front comb (and rear if applicable) easier.
In an embodiment, the barbeque grill further comprises a tray having a base and perimetrical side wall extending from the base, a lip extending inwards from the side wall below the top of the side wall, the tray configured so that at least the front comb can rest on and be supported and held in position by the lip so that a user can move the at least one side comb into position. This makes assembly easier.
In an embodiment, the combs are configured so that in at least one orientation, the combs are supported by the lip and are substantially immersed in a fluid filling the tray to the lip. This allows the grill to be soaked prior to disassembly and cleaning, and makes cleaning easier.

Detailed Description of Figures
Embodiments of the barbeque grill assembly of the present invention will now be described with reference to the figures.
A first embodiment of barbeque grill assembly 1 has a front comb 2, a rear comb 11, a left-side comb 5 and a right-side comb 6. Each comb has a substantially straight spine (front spine 3, rear spine 12, left spine 7, right spine 8), and a plurality of substantially parallel elongate teeth that extend from one side of the spine at spaced intervals (front teeth 4, rear teeth 13, left teeth 9, right teeth 10).
As shown in figures 3 and 4, the elongate teeth 4, 13 on each of the front and rear combs 2, 11 are grouped in pairs along the length of the spines. The rear comb 2 has a pair of side arms 14, one at each end of the rear spine 3, that extend substantially parallel to the rear comb teeth. The front and rear combs 2, 11 are sized, and the elongate teeth 4, 13 are grouped, so that the front and rear combs 2, 11 can be placed together to form a generally rectangular grid, the outer ends of the arms 14 in contact with the ends of the front spine, with pairs of teeth from each spine extending across the centre of the rectangle, parallel to the arms 14 and perpendicular to the spines 3, 12. The rectangle is substantially flat. However, the teeth 4, 13 are formed to have waves or indents 15. Each tooth pair has one tooth with a single wave trough at approximately the mid point, the second, adjacent tooth in the pair having two wave troughs approximately a quarter and three-quarters of the way along its length. The front and rear teeth are configured so that when the rectangle is formed, single or double wave teeth alternate across the width of the grill.
Each of the side combs has a spine 7 or 8, and teeth 9, 10 that extend from the spine substantially perpendicular to the spine. Each side comb has three teeth, spaced at equal intervals, a central tooth and two side teeth, one each side. The teeth are formed so that there is a short and long tooth each side of the central tooth, which has a length approximately midway between the length of the long and short side teeth. The left and right side combs 7, 8 together form a pair, so that the teeth can be matched or paired, short with long, and central with central, so that together they extend the full width of the grid (i.e. substantially the same length as the front and rear spines 3, 12).
In use, as outlined above, the front and rear combs 2, 11 are placed together to form a rectangular shape with the teeth 4, 13 extending front-to-rear across the rectangle.
The front and rear combs 2, 11 can be connected via tabs 16 at each end of the front spine 3, and the side arms 14. These have mutually opposed surfaces (i.e. facing up and down respectively), and form an interference fit, so that the arms have to be slightly bent to get the end to slide over the tabs on the end of the spine. This creates friction that holds the combs together. Similarly, the ends of the teeth 4, 13 are bent slightly to slide over the top of the spines onto slots 18 in the spines so that the front and rear combs 2, 11 are held together, and can be easily pulled apart when disassembly is required. The side combs are pushed in from each side. The teeth 9, on the side combs are substantially straight, and align perpendicular to the teeth 4, 13. The teeth 9, 10 and waves or indents 15 are positioned so that the teeth slide through the indents to form an interweave across the grid. The ends of the side teeth meet and overlap, short-to-long at the front and rear, and centre-to-centre. As shown in figure 8, the ends can be mutually shaped to interlock, again with an interference fit if necessary, so the side combs are held together by friction with each other, and friction where they contact the waves or indents 15. Each of the side arms can be shaped so as to receive the side spines 7, 8 in a cut-out or indent, as shown in the figures, and in particular figure 4.
The grid described above can easily be assembled, and disassembled after use for cleaning and storage. The construction described makes it easy to form the components with flat surfaces and avoiding awkward corners and nooks and crannies where hard-to-clean dirt can accumulate. For example, the teeth and spines can be formed as a single-piece item, and the transition from the spines to the teeth can be gradual or curved, rather that sharply cornered.
As shown in figures 5 and 6, a tray 19 is provided that can help with assembly and cleaning. The tray has a base with perimetrical side walls extending from the base so that the tray can hold a volume of fluid. A lip extends inwards from the side wall below the top of the side wall. The tray is configured so that the front and rear combs can be placed on the lip in the correct position for assembly, resting on the lip and held loosely in position by the side wall above the lip (i.e. not an interference fit). The side wall has cut-outs or indents at each side that are used to insert the side combs through the front and rear combs to assemble the barbeque grill assembly 1. After use, the barbeque grill assembly 1 is placed in the tray and the side combs can be removed through the indents. The barbeque grill assembly 1 is configured so that in at least one orientation, the combs are supported by the lip and are substantially immersed in a fluid filling the tray to or above the lip. This allows the grill to be soaked prior to disassembly and cleaning, and makes cleaning easier.
The barbeque grill assembly 1 described above is rectangular in shape. Other shapes could also be used within the scope of the invention. For example, a circular or oval grid could be constructed using curved spines interlocking or otherwise connecting at their ends. Teeth that are wavy or curved along their length could be used for e.g. the front and rear combs. Alternatively, the side teeth could be wavy, and those on the front and rear combs could be straight. It should also be noted that a grid of interwoven teeth could also be formed form two combs, rather than the four described above for the preferred embodiment. An alternate rectangular construction is shown in figure 7.
Where directional references are used in the description above and throughout the description, these refer to directions as perceived by a user in front of a grill assembled ready for use.
The invention has been described by way of examples only and it will be appreciated that variation may be made to the above-mentioned embodiments without departing from the scope of invention. Firstly it will be understood that any features described in relation to any particular embodiment may be featured in combinations with other embodiments.
With respect to the specification therefore, it is to be realised that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variations in size, materials, shape, form, function and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.
Therefore, the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention, with variation and implementation obvious and clear on the basis of either common general knowledge or of expert knowledge in the field concerned.
