Abstract
252,246. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Whitaher, F. P. Feb. 19, 1925. Synchronizing dynamoelectric machines. - A motor - converter is started by an apparatus comprising resistance and reactance such that at starting at least the resistance is connected to the slip-rings and when the desired speed is reached the resistance is rendered ineffective and the reactance alone is left in circuit with the rings. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the resistance a is connected to the rings b at starting, and when the converter has reached a nearly synchronous speed the switch d is thrown over so as to replace the resistance by a reactance c. A switch e may be provided for short-circuiting the reactance when the machine has dropped into synchronism. The resistance and reactance elements may be connected in series, as shown in Fig. 3, the two-way switch d being thrown upwards for starting on the resistance with the reactance short-circuited and downwards, thereafter, for synchronizing on the reactance with the resistance short-circuited. A second switch e enables the rings to be short-circuited for permanent running. Alternatively, both resistance and reactance may be in circuit with the rings at starting, the resistance being so operated subsequently as to leave the reactance alone in circuit for synchronization.
