Abstract

252,007. American Cable Co., Inc., (Assignees of Conner, E. A.). May 9, 1925, [Convention date]. Wire ropes; machines for making. - In a machine for making wire ropes &c. wherein the component wires are driven simultaneously through dies so as to form them into helices the helical components are laid into a strand, rope &c. as they emerge from the preforming means. The forming head 40 may be arranged to rotate with the flyer 14, 15 carrying the supply reels 30 or may be stationary, the wires with this arrangement being laid by means of a flyer carrying the receiving reels; and comprises in the rotating form a collar 11 keyed to the spindle 9 carrying the supply reels 30 and preferably formed integrally with the flyer 14. 15, and provided with a number of holes 13, through which the wires 44 are led to rollers 45, 46 by which they are fed to the forming dies 41. The dies 41 comprise pins having peripheral helical grooves and are carried in a flanged portion 53 of the head. the portion 53 also carrying the feed rollers 45. 46 which are driven through worm gearing 54. 55 by spur wheels 59 which are carried by the portion 53 and engage a stationary annular wheel 60 carried bv one of the machine supports 2. The wires leaving the forming head are preferably laid about a wire core 33 which is drawn through the hollow spindle 9. The stationary form of head differs only in that the annular gear 60 is driven through gearing from the lay shaft 4 and that the spindle 9 is stationary. The spindle 9 is slidable axially to permit removal &c. of the supply reels 30 and is locked in position by a hand-wheel 10 and the reels 30 are braked by devices 32 carried by the flyer. the flyer 14. 15 being mounted at the end remote from the forming bead by rollers 34 engaging in an annular track 35. The receiving reel which is mounted in the usual manner so as to rotate end-upon-end with the flyer, is rotated within the fiver for taking up the finished rope by gearing which includes a friction clutch.
