Abstract

206,103. American Chain Co., Inc., (Assignees of Conner, E. A.). Oct. 27, 1922, [Convention date]. Machines for making. - In a machine for making stranded cables, a core 33, Fig. 5, passes through a hollow spindle 59 of a stranding unit. The spindle is driven by a gear 60 from a gear 53 on a lay shaft 52 and carries flyer arms 72 and six helically-grooved dies 42, Fig. 8. Wires for the strands are drawn from spools 81, which are loosely mounted on the spindle 59 and retarded by brakes 75 on the arm 72, and pass over guide pulleys 16, 22, 28 to the dies 42 where they are first formed into helices and thereafter laid into position to form the cable. The pulleys 16 are swivelled so as to adapt themselves to the decreasing diameter of wire on the spools. The arms 72 are prevented from flying outwards by rolls 73 thereon engaging an annular track 74. The cable thus formed passes through a similar stranding unit which is driven by the shaft 52 and lays twelve more wires upon the cable to complete it. Reserve wire spools 67 similar to the spools 81 are loosely splined on a sleeve 64, which is rotatably mounted on a reduced portion of the spindle 59 and is driven through a clutch 57 mounted on a sleeve coaxial with the spindle and carrying a gear 56. Wire from a source of supply is wound on the spools 67, and when these spools are full a lever 84 is forced downwards and disengages the members of the clutch. When the spools 81 are exhausted they are removed from the spindle 59, each spool being constructed of two interlocking semi-cylindrical parts, the spools 67 are moved along the spindle to take the place of the spools 81 for supplying wire to the flyer, and the empty spools are replaced on the sleeve 64 so as to receive a fresh winding of wire from the source of supply. In a modification of the machine no provision is made for winding fresh wire on the spools, it being necessary to remove the empty spools and insert full ones by withdrawing the spindle 59 from one end of the machine. Specification 206,605 is referred to.
