Abstract

206,605. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (American Chain Co., Inc.). Aug. 15, 1922. Machines for making. - In a machine for making stranded cables, a core 4, Fig. 2, drawn from a reel 5 passes through hollow spindles 3 of a number of stranding units. Each spindle is driven by a gear 60 from a gear 55 on a common shaft 23, and carries flyer-arms 32, 33 and a die 39<1>, Fig. 4, having a helical groove 40. Wire for the strand is drawn from a spool C, which is loosely mounted on the spindle 3 and retarded by a brake 41 on the arm 33, and passes over guide-pulleys 34, 35, 36 to the die 39<1> where it is preformed into a helix and thereafter laid into position to form a component part of the cable. The completed cable passes a number of times about pulleys 6, 7 of a drawing-off mechanism, the pulleys being connected together by chaingear 17 and driven from the shaft 23 through bevel-gear 10. A reserve wire spool D similar to the spool C and loose on the spindle 3 is driven through a clutch 24 mounted on a sleeve coaxial with the spindle and carrying a gear 59. Wire from a supply reel is wound on the spool D and when the spool is full a lever 49 is forced back against the action of a spring and trips the clutch. When the spool C is exhausted it is removed from the spindle 3, the spool being constructed of two interlocking parts 25, 26, Fig. 7, the spool D is moved along the spindle to take the place of the spool C for supplying wire to the flyer, and the empty spool is replaced on the spindle 3 adjacent to the clutch 24 so as to receive a fresh winding of wire from the supply reel, a square mortise 63 in the spool engaging a square part on the clutch.
