Abstract

251,782. Armstrong, J. J. V., (Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Ges.). May 23, 1925. Aerostats.-A gas cell for rigid airships comprises an inner chamber of cylindrical or other curved form with flat end faces which contains an inflammable lifting gas, and an outer chamber containing a protective gas which surrounds the whole of the curved surface of the gas chamber but only the edge zones of its end faces. Fig. 1 shows a gas chamber W with initially open ends which is secured by flanges d to the end walls e<1> of an outer chamber S. The lifting forces are transmitted to the airship framework by eyeletted strips K. Alternatively the gas chamber may have closed ends with the outer chamber walls secured thereto by annular flanges. Fig. 4 shows a cross section of a gas chamber made in two parts C<1>, C" seamed together at f where a lacing strip h is fixed. These strips are connected by lacing g to similar strips i secured to the outer chamber walls which are connected at these points to the airship framework. Helium and hydrogen may be used respectively as the protective and lifting gases.
