Abstract
Traffic speed limit sign 1 comprises reflective optical filter 8. Light emitted by a light emitting and receiving component inside an oncoming vehicle is detected by said reflective optical filter. Light reflected from said filter is representative of the speed limit of said sign, e.g. its wavelength may depend on the speed limit. The reflected light is received by said component in order to display information (e.g. the speed limit) inside said vehicle. The sign may be powered by solar panel on its rear and the reflective optical filter may be detachable from the sign. Alternatively a speed sign may comprise a communication system which is activated by detection of an oncoming vehicle (e.g. detection of vehicle motion), causing transmission of a signal (e.g. contain speed information) to the vehicle in order to display information inside it.

Field of the Invention
is The invention relates to traffic speed Umit signs, communication systems and methods of communication.
ctground to the I3IJS1Qn The dosest prior art known to the applicant is satellite navigation te.chnology which is able to inform drivers of the speed limit of the road they are drMng on. However, the disadvantage of this is that this technology requires frequent updates from the internet so that speed Vmft changes are kept current. These systems cannot take account of temporay speed limit changes such as changes due to road works or public events.
Other prior art known to the applicant are traffic signs that use radar to detect oncoming vehicles and a warning is given to an over speed vehicle to remind a driver of the speed limIt, The disadvantage with these signs is that the warning is observed only outside of the oncoming vehicle.
Other prior art, EP1422618, concerns an autonomous communication stem, having a transmitter position at a fixed point and sending positional information to a vehicle mounted receiver within the range of operation of the latter. The system has means for detecting the presence and/or direction of movement of the receiving device defining a detection zone and means adapted to broadcast messages comprising information related to the location, The disadvantage of this configuration is that it requires two terminals; the s diffusion of the message occurring after the vehicle has passed a detection terminal and before the vehicle arrives at a diffusion terminaL Other prior art US4B1 682 1, concerns a road safety installation with emission of sound messages for every pe of signalling panel fixed along a road. The disadvantage of this configuration is that it emits only sound messages to the driver of a vehicle, mmafvention is In the first broad independent aspect., the invention provides a communication system comprising a detector positioned on a speed Limit sign for detection of an oncoming veFucle, sad detector bemg a refLectve opticaL hiter, and a light emttmg and recemng component Located inside said oncoming vehicle; wherein the emission of light from said emitting and receiving component is detected by said detector; and reflected Light from sad detector s subsequently recerved as a sgnal by sac comporent rn order to dssplay information inside said vehicle; said reflected light being representative of the speed Limit of said sign.
This system provides the driver of a vehicle with clearer speed Limit information when the vehicle is passing a particular area, Additionally, the speed limit can be kept up to date to take account of changes due to road works or public events as the reflective optical filter can be changed to represent a different speed limit of the sign. The clearer speed limit information ensures that a driver is more Likely to respond to a change in speed Limit of a road.
Preferably, said reflective optical filter is detachable from s&d sign. This provides the advantage that the niter can be strughtforwardly placed on the front face of the sgn unobtrusively and changed easily if required.
Preferably, said speed limit sign is powered by a solar paneL located at the rear of said sign.
This configuration provides a low maintenance, preferabLy mono lithic and compact sign.
in a second broad independent aspect, the invention provides a method of cornrnunkation s between a traffic speed limit sign and an oncoming vehkle, comprising the steps of; emitting light from a vehicle towards a traffic speed limit sign; detection of Ught by a refLective optical filter on said sign; reflecting tight back towards said vehicle at a specific wavelength dependent on the speed Limit of said sign; receiving said reflected Light as a signal inside said vehicle; and displaying information inside said vehicle representative of iv the speed limit of said sign.
This is advantageous because the reflected light, representative of the speed Limit of the sign, allows the driver of said vehicle to be more aware of the speed information of the road This s espenaPy ¶gnEhcant where the speed bma changes frequently along a route is or if the speed limit is temporay due to changes such as road works or public events as the reflective opticat filter can be changed. Communication received inside said vehicle will be advantageous over speed limit information displayed outside of the vehicle.
In a third broad independent aspect the invention provides a traffic speed limit sign comprising a communication system; said communication system incorporating a detector for detection of an oncoming vehicle; and a transmitter for communicating to said vehicle; whereby the motion of said vehicle toward said traffic sign activates said communication system; whereby activation of said communication system causes said transmitter to transmit a signal to said vehicle in order to display information inside said vehicle, The advantage of this sign is that it provides the driver of a vehicle with clearer speed Limit nformanon when the vehcle s passing a particular area Addaonally, the speed Limit can be kept up to date to take account of changes due to road works or pubUc events. The clearer speed Limit inFormation ensures that a driver is more likely to respond to a change in speed limit of a road.
Preferably, said traFic speed limit gn is further powered by a so1a 9anel that is located at the rear of the sign This configuration provides a low maintenance, preferably monolithic and compact sign.
Preferably, said transmitter for commurdcating to said vehde is located at the rear of said sign. This provides the means of transmitting a signal to said vehicle once ft has passed said sign in order to be received and displayed inside said vehicle whilst ft is inside the designated speed limit zone.
Preferably, a commumcanon system comprises a traffic speed bmt sgn and a vehcle which comprises a receiver, for receffing said signal and a display unit for displaying information inside said vehicle following the receipt of the signaL This configuration is advantageous because it enables the communication of speed information between the traffic speed limit sign and an oncoming vehicle so that speed information can be displayed inside said oncoming vehicle.
is In a fourth broad mdependent aspect, the rventon pwvdes a mttthoc of commurucauon between a traffic speed limit sign and an oncoming vehicle, comprising the steps of: detecvng an oncomng vehcle, transmthng a sgnaL cortanmg speed nformaton, to a receiver of said vehicle; arid displaying the transmitted signal inside said vehicle. This is advantageous because the transmission of a signal incorporating speed information, to an oncoming vehicle allows the driver of said vehicle to more easily view the speed information of the road. This is especially significant where the speed information is temporary due to changes such as road works or public events, Communication received inside said vehicle wilt be advantageous over speed Limit information displayed outside of the vehicle.
