Abstract

250,803. Darimont, L. July 30, 1925. Addition to 241,729. Diaphragms; electrolytes.-The. cement coating of the porous membrane of the two-fiuid cell described in the parent Specification is covered with a layer of an alkaline oleate which reacts with chloride of iron or zinc in the cell to produce a semi-permeable membrane. This enables alkaline salts such as chloride of sodium or potassium or rock salt to be used in the exciting solution. A suitable covering comprises 4 grams of white hard soap dissolved in 2000 c.c. of water. To this any of the following substances may be added, viz. :-Corn flour 12 grams, soda phosphate 20 grams, linseed oil 8 c.c., caustic potash or soda 10 grams, or 50 c.c. of a solution containing 6 per cent of alum in water. The following composition is suggested for the exciting solution, viz. :-Water 1000 c.c. and sodium chloride 250 grams; to this may be added any of the following, viz. :-Double chloride of sodium and zinc 25 grams, dextrine or fish glue 60 grams, zinc or calcium chloride 10 grams. A water absorbing or porous material-e.g. cottonmay also be added to the exciting solution. The depolarizing solution may comprise ferric chloride 450 grams and barium chloride 15 grams, with an optional addition of chromium oxide and hydrochloric acid. Water is added till the osmotic pressure coresponds with that of the exciting solution.
