Tobacco leaves in bundles e, Fig. 1, are loosened and separated one from another by causing them to pass between two rows of resiliently mounted rollers a, b and alternately on opposite sides of the members of a third row of rollers or other blunt members a situated between the rows a, b. The rollers &c. d or the rollers a, b are adapted to be moved laterally by cams on their spindles and, in returning under the action of springs, to impart glancing blows to the bundles e, whereby the individual leaves are loosened. The final separation of the leaves is effected by rotary fingering members f which rub the bundles against roughened wall g. When the leaves in the bundle are folded one within another, the initial separation is effected by passing the bundles between pairs of resiliently mounted rollers b, Fig. 5, driven by skew gearing b<1>, b<2> at successively greater speeds. One of the shafts i<1>, i<2> carrying the pinions b<2> may be rotated at a higher speed than the other, thus causing the leaves to be rolled off from the bundle.
