Abstract
A door 3 comprises a peripheral frame member 5 and a transverse member 11 dividing the door into lower and upper sections. A panel 13 closes the lower section and an opening escape hatch 15 is provided in the upper section and is pivotable about an edge thereof relative to the remainder of the door. The opening hatch is adapted, when open, to allow a person to pass through the resulting opening in the door. The escape hatch may have an interior panel 19 which may be transparent, translucent or opaque. Seals may be located around the edge of the escape hatch and locks may be provided to lock the hatch from the outside of the door, the locking mechanism may also be automatic. The escape hatch may be a window having window stays 21. The door is designed for victims of floods to escape a building when flood water has risen up against the exterior of the door.
Description
DOOR ASSEMBLY WITH ESCAPE HATCH
This invention relates to a door assembly with an escape hatch, especially a flood defence door assembly with an escape hatch, which allows people to exit a building without compromising the flood-proof integrity of the door.
It is becoming common practice to provide building in areas at risk of flooding with flood defence doors, at least on the ground floor, but once the door has been locked to form a watertight seal it becomes impossible to exit the building through any of the doorways. Consequently, in order to exit the building in flood conditions, people have to climb out of windows on the ground floor or on upper floors.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a door assembly with an escape hatch which overcomes or at least ameliorates the above problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a door with an escape hatch, the door comprising: a peripheral frame member and a transverse member dividing the door into lower and upper sections; a panel closing the lower section; and an opening hatch provided in the upper section and pivotable about an edge thereof relative to the remainder of the door, the opening hatch being adapted, when open, to allow a person to pass through the resulting opening in the door.
The opening hatch may be pivotably mounted, for example hinged, relative to the remainder of the door by way of a side edge, an upper edge or a lower edge of the hatch.
The opening hatch may be adapted to open inwardly or outwardly relative to a building when the door is mounted therein.
The opening hatch may comprise a peripheral hatch frame provided with an interior panel. The interior panel may be opaque or transparent or translucent, such as a double glazed unit.
When closed, the peripheral hatch frame of the opening hatch may seal against the peripheral frame member and transverse member.
One or more stays may be provided to maintain the opening hatch in an open position.
The opening hatch may be provided with locking means which allows the opening hatch to be opened, closed, locked (for example automatically) and unlocked. The locking means may include means for locking, and optionally unlocking, the opening hatch from outside the door.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a door frame assembly including a door frame and a door as hereinbefore defined, the door being hinged to the door frame.
The door may be hinged to the frame so as to be openable outwardly relative to a building. Alternatively, the door may be hinged to the door frame so as to be openable inwardly relative to a building.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevational view of an embodiment of a door assembly with an escape hatch according to the present invention, the door assembly being in the form of a flood defence door with the escape hatch in a closed position; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the door assembly of Figures 1 with the escape hatch in an open position.
The door assembly shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises a door frame 1 with a door 3 hingedly mounted in the frame 1 in a conventional manner. The door 3 is shown as opening outwardly from the building, but may alternatively open inwardly. An outwardlyopening door is more practical in flood defence situations because the pressure of any flood water tends to urge the door against the frame and improve the seal, but in some countries (such as the United Kingdom) it is conventional to use inwardly-opening doors.
The door may be sealed by any conventional means which is not described further.
The door 3 comprises a peripheral frame member 5 which is provided internally (and externally) with a handle 7 and a lock 9. The frame member also includes a transverse member 11 in the mid region of the door, dividing the interior region of the door into lower and upper sections. The lower section is provided with a solid panel 13, while the upper section is provided with an opening hatch 15.
The opening hatch 15 is hinged to the peripheral frame member 5 at the side closest to the edge of the door 3 that is hinged to the door frame 1, although it could be hinged at the opposite side or along the top or bottom. In addition, although the opening hatch 15 is shown as opening inwardly, it could alternatively open outwardly.
The opening hatch comprises a peripheral hatch frame 17 with an interior panel 19. When closed, the peripheral hatch frame seals against the peripheral frame member and transverse member of the door. The interior panel may be opaque or may be transparent or translucent, such as a double glazed unit. Stays 21 are provided to maintain the opening hatch 15 in an open position. The peripheral hatch frame 17 is provided with a locking handle 23, which allows the opening hatch to be opened, closed, locked and unlocked. Although not shown, the lock in the locking handle 23 may additionally be operable from outside the building so that the opening hatch can be closed and locked after people have exited the building. Alternatively, the opening hatch may be provided with an external pull tab to allow the hatch to be closed and/or the lock may engage, for example automatically, to lock the hatch when the hatch is closed.
The opening hatch is dimensioned to allow a person readily to pass through the resulting opening in the door, such as at least 450 mm wide by 750 mm and not more than 1100 m from floor level.
