Abstract
A hinge comprising first and second hinge leafs 3 pivotally mounted about hinge pin 2 and includes a spring and cam mechanism for angular control. Preferably each knuckle of each flange 3 has a toothed profile 4 which meshes with the other hinge leaf and the spring 1 which may be a wave-like washer spring or helical coil spring provides a bias urging the serrated cam 4 profiles together. The toothed profile may have a plurality of teeth to retain the hinge in a plurality of positions. The toothed profile may have a different rise and fall profile to provide differing opening and closing forces, by having a longer but shallower slope on the fall greater angular rotation can be caused by the bias of the spring.
Description
PSB-Hinge Title: PSB-Hinge
Background:
Many different types of fittings for doors and cabinets (hinges, door closers, door stoppers, latches and locks etc) are available in the market. Some fittings serve general and some specialised purposes. Most of them are available in different shapes and sizes to cover a range of applications.
One of the problems with these fittings is that few offer multiple uses. Most of them are designed to serve one particular application or operation. For example a door latch', whether incorporated in a lock or used separately, will only hold the door closed and will not in any way help to open the door or keep the door opened in a particular position. If the door has to be kept open in a particular position (or angle of opening), a door stopper' has to be used.
This invention aim to provide the following: 1. A universal, multi-purpose hinge that can be used in doors, cabinets and some specialised brackets.
2. A universal door hinge that will serve as a door-closer', door-opener' and door-stopper' all incorporated in one thus eliminating the need of using separate fittings for each of these operations.
3. A universal door hinge that is variable and scalable in design and manufacture to suit varied applications.
Statement of Invention:
To overcome some of these problems and to provide such a universal and multipurpose fitting, the design of special hinge, called PSB-Hinge' is proposed in this patent.
The PSB-Hinge is a combination of two plates (or flanges), a central pin, a cylinder and a Springs & Cam' mechanism that allows the door to close, stay closed, open and keep opening to a predetermined position and then stay open at that position. It further allows more openings of the door to more predetermined positions according to its design. Although there are various pads and mechanisms operating within the PSB-Hinge, it is simple in design, construction, manufacture and use.
Advantages: 1. The first part of the Spring & Cam' mechanism ensures that the door is closed and stays closed unless forced to open by hand.
2. The second part of the Spring & Cam' mechanism ensures that the door is opened slowly to a pre-determined position.
3. The third pad of the Spring & Cam' mechanism ensures that the door stays open at that position and is not further opened or closed unless done by hand.
4. Subsequent parts of the Spring & Cam' mechanism ensure that any further opening to the next position can be achieved by the same procedure as before.
5. The design and size of the PSB-Hinge is comparable to the existing simple and normally used hinges available in the market, thus making it simple to install even retrospectively.
Introduction to drawings:
The drawings attached with this invention describe the following: Fig. 1 shows a typical design of the PSB-Hinge and its various parts when assembled.
Fig. 2 shows the cam-mechanism for 90 degree pitch which allows the door to open to 90 degree angle in stage-I, and up to 180 degree angle in stage-2 and so on. The PSB-hinge is shown as open or unrolled' around the holding pin' to show the cam-mechanism in details.

Detailed Description:
Two flange plates are joined via a Spring & Cam' mechanism at the centre Fig 1. The flange plates have normal holes for fixing into the door and the door frame. The central cylinder holds the central pin and Spring & Cam' mechanism. The springs are placed at both ends of the cylinder and can be short coil springs or disc or wave springs.
The Cam mechanism is shown in items 4, 5.
Fig.2 shows the cylinder in a rolled out view to clarify the cam system used.
The Fig.2 also shows the cam mechanism divided into four parts for 90 degree door openings. The cam can be divided into three equal parts to give a 120 degree door opening and two equal parts for degree door opening. Furthermore the cam can be divided into any desired number of equal or unequal parts to provide desired door openings.

- <claim-text>PSB-Hinge-120828 Claims: 1. The present invention uses a Spring & Cern' mechanism in the central cylinder which joins the two flanges of the hinge.</claim-text> <claim-text>2. A Spring & Cam' mechanism according to Claim 1, in which the two flange plates of the hinge are held together with a pin and pressure from the springs at the ends of the central pin. The springs can be any type of spring, a wave or disc spring or coil spring, either at one end or at both ends.</claim-text> <claim-text>3. A Spring & Cam' mechanism according to Claim 1, in which the cam arrangement is made on the two edges of the flange plates which rotate against each other around the central pin. The total circumference of the cylindrical faces of the rotating plate-areas can be divided equally into any number of sectors to produce door opening of different combinations. Each sector consists of a rise' section and fall' section. The rise' section (door opening part) of the cam is kept very small as compared to iall' section (door closing part) of the cam as shown in Fig
