Description

Support frame for a sliding door
Description
The present invention relates to a support frame for mounting a sliding door. In particular, the invention relates to a support frame for mounting a sliding door in a cavity of a partition wall. The present invention also relates to a support column for a sliding door support frame and a method of assembling a support frame for a sliding door.
Sliding doors are well known for enclosing a doorway formed in a wall or the like.
Such doors are generally mounted by means of a sliding guide mechanism fitted to the upper and/or lower ends of a door which is received in a respective guide rail which forms a track along which the door slides. Traditionally, such tracks have extended parallel to a portion of the wall adjacent to the doorway and across the H doorway such that the door can slide from an open' position, wherein the door locates along the wall, and a closed' position, wherein the door locates to cover the doorway. i\n advantage of such a door is that it reduces the floor space required to open and close the door. I lowever, a problem with a conventional sliding door is that, generally, it does not form a close fit with the doorway and so allows air draughts and sound to pass through the space formed therearound. Further, the door lies along the outer surface of the respective wall when it is open' such that furniture or the like cannot he located against the wall.
The interior walls of modern buildings, such as residential houses, are generally formed from partition or stud walls. Such a partition wall is fornied from a framework, generally of timber construction, extending between a ceiling, a floor and opposing walls to partition the interior space into separate rooms. Plasterboard is mounted to either side of the framework to enclose the framework therebet\vcen and form a planar surface. \Vith such an arrangement it will he understood that a cavity is formed internally xvithin the xvalls bet\veen the opposing panels of plasterboard. Additionally, doorways are formed through the partition wall, by forming a necessary sized space in the framework which is then left uncovered by plasterboard.
Therefore, it is known to mount a sliding door within the internal cavity formed between opposing plasterboard panels. However, with such an arrangement, it is necessary to remove part of the framework of the wall to create a substantially sized space to receive a sliding door when it is in an open' position. Therefore, there is a problem in that it is necessary to provide a support frame to support the plasterboard and form part of the framework of the wall itself, as well as to support the guide tracks along which the door is guided as well as the door itself.
/0 The space between the opposing plasterboard surfaces or the like is minimised so as to maximise the floor space of the adjoining rooms and so it is advantageous to minimise the size of the support frame itself.
Support frames are known which are generally formed from planar sheets of H material, in particular steel, which extend between lower and upper support frame members to support the upper and lower support frame members and form a surface and to which plasterboard panels or the like may he mounted. A disadvantage of such an arrangement is that the planar sheets of material are not particularly rigid and so must he of a substantial thickness to reduce deflection and form a support frame. Additionally, buildings are not generally built to exact tolerances and so it is necessary to alter the size of the frame, and hence the panel.
\Vith conventional systems it is necessary to take precise measurements so that the frame can he made to measure. Alternatively, the components can be provided oversi2ed and then cut to the desired measurement prior to installation. Ho\vever, this necessitates the use of metal cutting implements such as an angle grinder and metal saws which an installer may not have readily available. Furthermore, such planar sheets of material are quite large and so are difficult to handle and manoeuvre.
so One proposed solution to deal with the problems discussed above is to provide a side panel which extends between an upper support frame member and a lower support frame member with panel portions that overlap and slide relative to each other so that the distance between the upper and lower support frame is able to be altered during installation of the support frame. Such a support frame is known from United TKingdom patent application no. 0721836.5. However, a problem with such a support frame is that the side panels are large and unwieldy, am] are prone to bending and buckling. Furthermore, in this arrangement the side panels are able to deflect about a vertical axis.
It is possible to reduce the width of the side panels to make them easier to manoeuvre and to reduce the weight and amount of material needed. However, it is recognised that reducing the width of the side panels will also reduce their structural integrity and increase the likelihood of the side panels bending and buckling.
The present invention seeks to provide a support frame for mounting a sliding door that overcomes or substantially alleviates the problems with known support frames referred to above.
H
According to the present invention, there is provided a support frame for a sliding door comprising upper and lower support frame members and a support column attachable to the upper and loxver support frame members to extend between said upper and lower support frame members, wherein the support column comprises inner and outer stud sections that overlap and slide relative to each other so that the distance between the upper and lower support frame members is able to be altered during installation of the support frame by sliding the two stud sections relative to each other.
Advantageously, the support column comprises a reinforcing member.
The reinforcing member may he received in the inner stud section.
The inner stud section may define an inner channel and the reinforcing member may he received in the inner channel.
Conveniently, the inner stud section has a lip extending along the inner channel xvhich is configured to retain the reinforcing tnetnber in the inner channel.
In one embodiment, the reinforcing member is formed from medium density fibreboard.
The inner stud section may he sildably received in an outer channel formed in the outer stud section.
The outer stud section may further comprise a return tab extending along the outer channel which is configured to retain the inner stud section in the channel formed in the outer stud section.
Advantageously, the inner stud section has a greater length than the outer stud section.
H Conveniently, the inner stud section is fixedly mountable to the lower support frame member and the outer stud section is fixedly mountable to the upper support frame member.
The support frame may further comprise a plurality of support columns attachable to the upper and sower support frame members and contigured to extend between said upper and lower support frame members.
In one embodiment, the p'urality of support columns are configured to he spaced from each other.
The lower support frame member may comprise a plurality of lower support frame elements.
Advantageously, two support columns are mountable to each lower support frame element.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a support column for a sliding door support frame comprising inner and outer stud sections that ovedap anJ sli(le relative to each other so that the length of the support column is abk to be altered (luring installation of a sliJing door support frame by sliJing the two stud sections relative to each other.
The support column may further comprise a reinforcing member.
AccorJing to another aspect of the invention, there is proviJeJ a method of assembling a support frame for a sliJing door comprising an two support frame members anJ a support column having two stud sections that overlap and slide relative to each other so that the length of the support column is able to he alterej, the method incluJing the step of mounting the two support frame members in a spaced arrangement, fixedly mounting an end of one of the stud sections to one of the support frame members, sliding the other stud section along the one stud section so that an end of the other stud section lies adjacent to the other support H frame member and fixedly mounting the end of the other stud section to said other support frame rnemher.
Embodiments of the present invention will now he described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG-TIRE I is an exp'oded perspective view of a support frame for a sliding door; FIGURE 2 is a support column for a support frame for a sliding door as shown in Figure 1; and FTG-URE 3 is a cross-sectional view of the support column shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in Figure 1 a sliding (loot assemhy I comprising a support frame 2 and a sliding door 3. The support frame 2 includes an upper support frame member 4, a lower support frame member 5, and four support colunms óa,6b,ôc,Gd. The sliding door assembly also comprises two wall boards 7.
The upper support frame member 4 is a beam which is shown in the drawings to be solid, hut may have a box-shaped cross section, and extends substantially horizontally.
A guide track 8 is fixedly mounted to a lower face 9 of the upper support member 4 by known means. The guide track 8 is substantially U-shaped in cross-section and has opposing elongate support flanges (not shown) extending along lower edges of the guide track 8 which define a longitudinally extending opening. The sliding door 3 is slidably mounted to the guide track 8 by a slide mechanism (not shown) having a sliding trolley (not shown) which is fixedly connected to the door 3 by known means and is received on the upper surfaces of the support flanges so that it can slide along the guide track 8. The slide mechanism (not shown) is conventional and so no further discussion of it will be given in this specification. End stops (not /0 shown) formed from a resilient material are disposed at each end of the guide track 8 to limit the path of the sliding door 3.
The lower support frame member 5 comprises two lower support frame elements 10, Il which are spaced from each other. Although two lower support frame H elements tO, II are shown in the present application, it will he appreciated that the number of lower support frame elements 10, Il is dependent on the number of support columns 6a, 6h, ôc, ôd, as will become apparent hercinaftcr. Each lower support frame element 10, II has a substantially C-shaped cross-section and comprises a plate base 12 and upstanding flange portions 13 extending from the plate base 12 spaced from, hut parallel to cach othcr. When assembled, each lower support framc clement 10, 11 is disposed vertically below the upper support framc member 4. Mounting holes 14 are formed through the plate base 12 to enable the lower support frame element 10, 11 to he fixedly mounted to a floor surface (not shown), although it will be appreciated that alternative mounting means may he used.
When the support frame 2 is assembled, the support columns 6a, 6h, 6c, 6d extend from the lower support frame elements 10, 11 to the upper support frame member 4. Corresponding first and second support columns 6a, 61) oppose each other and extend parallel to, but spaced from, each other, and third and fourth support columns 6c, 6d oppose each other and extend parallel to, but spaced from, each other. Each support column Ga, Gb, Oc, 6d is fixedly attached to a corresponding inner surface of the respective upstanding flange portions 13 of the lower support frame elements 10, 11, and fixedly attached to a corresponding outer surface of the upper support frame member 4 such that two support columns 6a-6d are mounted to each lower support frame element 10, ii and define a sliding door receiving space therebetween, and support columns 6a, 6b mounted to one lower support frame element 10 arc spaced from support columns 6c, 6d mounted to another lower support frame element Il.
Although in this embodiment two pairs of support columns are described and shown mounted to corresponding lower support frame elements 10, 11, it will he /0 appreciated that in another embodiment an alternative number of support columns is used.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, one of the support columns 6a-6d is shown. It will be appreciated that each support column 6a-6d has the same arrangement. The support H column 6a-6d shown in Figures 2 and 3 comprises an inner stud section 15 and an outer stud section 16. The outer stud section 16 overlaps the inner stud section 15 so that the inner stud section 15 is slidably received in the outer stud section 16, and so the stud sections 15, 16 are slid2hle relative to each other.
The outer stud section 16 is elongate and is generally [-shaped in cross-section, as shown in Figure 3, defining an outer elongate channel 17 therealong. The outer stud section 16 has a base wall 18, two opposing side walls 19 upstanding from, and extending along opposing elongate edges of the base wall 18 and return tabs 20 extending inwardly towards each other from upper edges of the side walls 19. The return tabs 20 extend parallel to the base wall 18 and free edges 22 of the return tabs 20 are spaced from each other to define an opening 23 to the outer channel 17 which extends along the length of the outer stud section 16. The elongate outer channel 17 is defined by the base wall 18, opposing side walls 19 and the return tabs 20. The two outer stud section side walls 19 diverge away from each other from the base wall 18 at an angle.
The inner stud section 15 is elongate and is generally U-shaped in cross-section, as shown in Figure 3, defining an inner elongate channel 24 therealong. The inner stud section 15 has a base wall 25, two opposing side walls 26 upstanding from, and extending along opposing elongate edges of the base wall 25 and return lips 27 extending inwardly towards each other from upper edges of the side walls 26. The return lips 27 extend parallel to the base wall 25 and free edges 28 of the return lips 27 are spaced from each other to define an opening 29 to the inner channel 24 which extends along the length of the inner stud section 15. The inner elongate channel 17 is defined by the base wall 25, opposing side walls 26 and the return lips 27. The two inner stud section side walls 26 converge towards each other from the base wall 26. /0
It will be appreciated that the dimensions of the outer surface 31 of the inner stud section 15 correspond to the dimensions of the inner surface 32 of the outer stud section 16, and the angle of the inner stud section side walls 26 correspond to the angle of the outer stud section side walls 19, so that the inner stud section 15 is H receivable in the outer elongate channel 17 of the outer stud section 16 and is slidable along the channel 17. \Vhen the inner stud section 15 is received in the elongate channel 17 of the outer stud section 16, the inner stud section 15 is retained in the outer stud section 16 by the inner stud section base wall 25 abutting the outer stud section return tabs 27. Similarly, the inner stud section return lips 27 abut, and shdc along, the outer stud section base wall 16, and the inner stud section side walls 26 abut, and slide along, the outer stud section side walls 19. Therefore, the inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 interlock with each other and are only able to slide relative to each other along a longitudinal axis, and are prevented hom rotating relative to each other.
The inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 are formed from a sheet metal, such as aluminium or stainless steel.
The support column 6a-6d shown in Figures 2 and 3 also has a reinforcing member 33 received in the inner channel 24 of the inner stud section 15. The reinforcing member 33 is an elongate beam with front and rear walls 34, 35 which locate against the inner surface of the inner stud section's return lips 27 and base wall 25 respectively. The reinforcing member 33 is received along the length of the inner stud section 15 and is formed from medium density fibreboard (MDF).
Alternatively, the reinforcing member is formed from another stiff material, such as a wood or plastic beam.
The reinforcing member 33 is received in the inner stud section 15 and has a greater rigidity than the inner and outer stud sections 16. Therefore, the reinforcing member 33 improves the rigidity of the support column 6a-6d and helps to prevent buckling and twisting of the support column 6a-6d. Furthermore, the overlap of the inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 and the reinforcing member 33 forms a /0 laminate structure which is inherently very strong and has a low deflection along its length.
It will he appreciated that in the present embodiment the inner stud section 15 is longer than the outer stud section 16 to maximise the length of the reinforcing H member received in the inner stud section, although it will he appreciated that the relative lengths of the stud sections 15, 16 are not limited thereto.
Although the inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 are u-shaped in cross-section, it will be appreciated that the inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 may have an alternative arrangement, for example they may be box shaped with an elongate bore formed through the middle. However, an advantage of the above described u-shaped arrangement is that the opening allows for greater tolerances, and reduces costs due to manufacture and materials.
Assembly of the support frame 2 for the sliding door 3 will now be discussed with reference to the Figures.
The upper support frame member 4 is fixedly mounted to a desired upper surface, such as a beam, by known means, for example bolts, and the two lower support frame elements 10, 11 of the lower support frame member 5 are fixedly mounted to a respective lo\ver surface by known means, such as bolts extending through mounting holes 14 in the plate base 12 of each element 10, 11. The lower support frame elements 10, 11 are spaced from each other and arc disposed vertically below -10-the upper support frame member 4 and sole plate 5 are disposed parallel to each other. The guide track S is fixedly mounted to the lower face 9 of the upper support member 4 so that it is disposed above and parallel to the lower support frame elements 10, 11.
The support columns 6a-6d are initially in a retracted condition, with the outer stud section 16 fully overlapping the inner stud section 15. Tt will he appreciated that the reinforcing member 33 is received in the inner stud section 15. Alternatively, it will be appreciated that the components of the support column 6a-6d may he /0 transported separated and assembled on site. An advantage of the support columns is that the space required to transport the support columns is minirnised.
Furthermore, it will be appreciated that the inner and outer stud sections 15, 16 oppose each other and so the rigidity of the support column is enhanced.
H One of the support columns 6a is positioned against a first lower support frame element 10 with the base wall 25 of the inner stud section 15 being located against one of the upstanding flange portions 13 and being fixedly attached thereto by a known fixing means, such as a locking bolt (not shown) extending through the base wall 25 and flange portion 13. It will he appreciated that the fixing means does not fixedly mount the outer stud section 16 to the lower support frame element 10 so that the outer stud section 16 interlocks with, hut is slidahie along the inner stud section 15.
The outer stud section 16 is then slid along the inner stud section 15 in a telescopic manner and extends from an upper end thereof to set the height of the support column 6a. An upper end of the outer stud section 16 is positioned against the upper support frame member 4 and the base wall IS of the outer stud section 16 is fixedly attached thereto by a known fixing means, such as a locking bolt (not shown) extending through the base wall 25 and into the upper support frame member 4.
The support column 6a is therefore fixedly mounted between the upper support frame member 4 and the lower support frame member 5. In particular, it will be -11 -appreciated that no cutting of the components is required to position and mount the support column Ga in the correct position. The reinforcing member 33 is disposed in the inner stud section 15. An advantage of the support column Ga described abovc is that it has a high rigidity. Furthermore, the laminate arrangement of the inner and onter stud sections 15, 16 and the reinforcing member 33, togcthcr with the rigidity provided by the reinforcing member 33 itself provide an increased stiffness and strength, and buckling and twisting of the support col utnn Ga is restricted.
/0 The reinforcing member 33 is fixedly mounted to both the inner stud section 15 and the outer stud section 16 by fixing elements, such as bolts, which extend through the inner stud section 15 and the outer stud section 16 to further strengthen and reinforce the support column Ga.
i Another support column 6b is then mounted between the first lower support frame element 10 and the upper support frame member 4 in the same manner as described above, with the base wall 25 of the inner stud section 15 of this support column 6b being located against the other upstanding flange portion 13 of the first lower support frame element 10, and the base wall lB of the outer stud section 16 being mounted on an opposing side of the upper support frame member 4 to the corresponding support column Ga. Therefore, the two support columns Ga, Gb mounted to the first lower support frame element 10 extend parallel, hut spaced from each other.
Similarly, two more support columns Ge, 6d are mounted between the second lower support frame element 11 and the upper support frame member 4 in that same manner as the first two support columns 6a, Gb so that they are securely mounted.
It will he appreciated that the distance between the first and second lower support frame elements 10, II, and therefore the spacing between the pairs of support columns Ga-Gd is determined by the desired dimensions of the support frame for a sliding door 3. For example, the distance between each pair of support columns 6a, Gd may be increased if a larger recess for receiving a shding door is required, or reduced if a smaller recess is reciuired. -12-
An advantage of the above arrangement is that the support frame is then modular and can then he used to form a large variety of support frame sizes without the need for any cutting of components.
Once the support columns Ga-ód have been fixedly mounted, a wall board 7 is positioned against and fixedly mounted to the two support columns óa, 6c on one side, and another wall board 7 is positioned against and fixedly mounted to the support columns 6b, 6c on the opposing side. Therefore, a door receiving space is defined between the vall boards 7 by the support frame for a sliding door, and the xvall boards 7 mounted to the support frame for a sliding door form a rigid partition wall.
The slide mechanism (not shown) is mounted at an upper end to the door 3 by H known means, and is mounted to the guide rail 8 by known means such that the door is slidable along the guide track 8 hetween an open position, in which the door is received in the door receiving space defined between the support columns, and an open position, in which the door extends from the door receiving space to enclose an opening in a wall. It \k7ill be appreciated that the guide rail extends beyond the support columns Ga-ôd and the wall boards 7, over the opening, so that the door can close the opening.
Although embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will he appreciated by those skilled in the art that these are preferred embodiments only and that changes may be made to these embodiments, or alternative embodiments are included, within the scope of the invention which is defined in the claims hereafter. 1-,
