Abstract

249,066. General Motors Research Corporation, (Assignees of Lee, R. K.). March 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Balancing moving parts by means of weights. - In multicylinder internal - combustion and other engines having cranks arranged at 180‹, uniformity of torque on the crank shaft is obtained by providing a movable pivot for the small end of the connecting rod. The piston 21 is formed with a skirt 22 within which is secured a pair of rings supporting a sheave 23. A disc 28 working in the sheave 23 is formed with an eccentric opening for receiving a pin the ends of which are received in bearings carried by bifurcations of the connecting rod 32. The piston is also provided with a cylindrical bearing 35 which receives a reciprocating member 36 carrying a pin 37 also passing through the bifurcations of the connecting rod. During the first quarter revolution from the top deadcentre the piston 21 is left behind relatively to the connecting rod, this being permitted by movement of the disc 28, but during the second quadrant the connecting rod is overtaken by the greater movement of the piston. The resultant of the inertia forces produced by the reciprocating parts is equal to zero for each position of the crank shaft.
