Abstract
248,977. Cicali, G. June 16, 1925. Separating gases by liquefaction.- Air &e. is divided into two portions, one of which is slightly compressed and cooled without expansion by the cold nitrogen resulting from the subsequent recti fication; the other portions is compressed to a higher pressure, cooled by the whole of the re sulting nitrogen and hydrogen, and separated intc two portions, one of which is liquefied without expansion, throttled down, and delivered to pans in the rectifying column, while the other is ex. panded into a motor to the same pressure as the slightly compressed portion and introduced with this portion into the bottom of the rectifier. Air &c. is compressed to a few atmospheres in a water-cooled compressor C<1> and passes through a water-cooled coil s'; it is then divided into twc parts one of which flows through a cock R<1> to a two-pipe heat exchange coil S<1> where it is cooled by a, counter current of rectified nitrogen, finally being led into the base of the rectification column through the pipe A. The other portion is compressed further in a water-cooled compressor C<2> cooled in a coil and passed into the middle pipe of a triple'heat-exchange coil S<2> cooled by oxygen and nitrogen flowing through the inner and outer pipes. Issuing from this coil it is divided, one portion flowing into an expansion chamber e and thence to the pipe A, while the other portion is further cooled and liquefied in a coil S<3> traversed by nitrogen which afterwards flows through the coil S<2>, and is delivered at the inlet C into the column. The gases rise from the base of the column through plates D; the liquefied oxygen is lead through a valved pipe E to the top of the column, containing plates G, from which it falls to vessels H. H' and to the outside of a heatexchange apparatus in which it is vaporized, passing off through an outlet z to the coil S<2>. The nitrogen rising in the column is liquefied in the lulose esters, natural or synthetic resin, paraffin. of the column. Here it is vaporized, and carried down to a point l where it is divided between the coils S<1> and S<2>.
