Abstract

248,859. Hay, G. S. Dec. 16, 1924. Emulsions, making. - An aqueous bituminous emulsion is stabilized by adding to the prepared emulsion a proportion up to about ten per cent of a stabilizing agent comprising one or more aliphatic alcohols and/or one or more hydrogenated phenols and/or one or more carbohydrates, the added substance or substances being water-soluble and capable of lowering the freezing point of the emulsion without disrupting it. Specified stabilizers are allyl alcohol, montan-wax alcohol, glycol, glycerine, cyclohexanol, glucose, fructose, and dextrin, and of these the specified alcohols are preferably employed as they exert, to some extent, a solvent action on the bitumen. Examples describe the stabilization of a bituminous emulsion prepared as described in Specification 202,201. Specifications 219,348 and 220,393 also are referred to.
