Abstract

248,508. Krell, G. Dec. 22, 1924. Borehole apparatus.-In clamping devices for use in oil wells &c. in lifting, holding &c. casings, sucker rods, &c. wherein opposed jaws are supported above a frame by pivotal connection to rocking members pivoted to the frame, the pivots of the jaws are adjacent the inner edges, and below the centre of gravity, of the jaws so that the upper ends of the latter tend to spread apart. The holding device shown comprises a frame 1 fixed to a casing head &c. by screws 61 and carrying rock shafts 8, 9, with fixed arms 10, 11, to which opposed jaws 15, 16, are pivoted towards the inner faces, and below the centre of gravity, of the jaws. A rod 33 holds the jaws substantially parallel, and toggle levers 50, 51 are connected to the trunnions of the jaws and to an arm 48 carried by a shaft 47 arranged between the rock shafts 8, 9; the shaft 47 carries a lever 38 whereby the jaws are closed or opened. A stop limits upward movement of the lever 38, while a spring-pressed pin, controlled by a lever 45, engages one of a aeries of recesses to hold the lever 38 in adjusted position. The jaws are inwardly bevelled above and below and carry similarly bevelled slips 21, 22 held by bolts 25 and provided with transverse gripping teeth; inserts 36 in the slips have vertical teeth to hold the object gripped against rotation, the teeth of the inserts projecting inwardly further than the teeth of the slips. A slot 2 in the frame 1 allows passage of the object to be gripped and this side of the frame may be braced by a bar 54 connecting the rock shafts. Lifting attachments 57, 58 are provided.
