Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
Application filed July 23, 1918. Serial No. 246,418.
1' pullers, and has for its object to provide a till device of the character specified, adapted for use in connection with drills of the jack haminer type, for preventing the drill bit from dropping out of the machine.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved puller;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a section on theline 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows ad'- j-acent to the line.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with the stem 1 of a drill bit, the stem having the usual collar 2 irigid therewith, with which the puller or holder engages.
The device comprises a frame consisting of a ring 3 and a pair of plates 4: and 5 connected together and held in spaced relation in a manner to be described.
The ring 3 and the plates 4: and 5 have radial lugs 6 and 7 and these lugs have registering openings for engagement by pins 8. Each pin is threaded at its opposite ends, and below the plate 5 each pin is engaged by a nut 8 The other end of each pin passes through openings in the frame 16 of v the drill and is engaged by a nut 8 Coil springs 9 encircle the pins between the ring 3 and the plate 4:, the said springs acting normally to hold the parts in the position shown. The plates 4 andb have openings which are of sufficient diameter to per mit the passage of the collar 2, and a. latch plate 10 is pivoted to one of the pins 8, and is adapted to swing in between the plates as shown, the said latch plate having a finger piece 11 which is adapted to engage the other pin 8 to limit the inward swinging movement of the plate.
It will be noticed by referring to Fig. 3 that the latch plate is hook shaped, that is, it has a notch or recess for receiving the drill stem 1, and the upper edge of the plate have registering openings, shown at 13 and .14, respectively, for receiving a pin 15 to prevent disengagement of the latch plate when it is in place. The upper edge of. the opening of the ring 3 is also beveled as shown. 4
In operation, theframe formed by the ring 3 and the plates 4 and 5 is attached to the drill frame by the pins 8 as before stated, and the drill stem 1 is slipped into the drill through the drill pulley, that is,
through the openings in the ring and in the plates {t and 5, until the collar 2 is above the latch 10. The latch plate is now swung into place between the plates 4 and 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and is locked by the pin 15.
I claim:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a. frame consisting of a ring and a pair of plates arranged in spaced parallel relation, said plates and ring having openings of a size to permit the passage of a drill stem and the holding collar thereon, pins connecting the plates and slidab-ly connected with the ring, coil springs arranged between the ring and the adjacent plate and encircling the pins, and a latch plate mounted to swing between the first named plates andhaying a notch or recess in one edge for receiving the drill stem and for preventing the passage of the collar, andmeans for holding the latch plate in place between the plates. v
2. A. device of. the character specified, comprising a-frame having a pair of spaced plates provided with registering openings of a size to permit the passage of the holding collar of a drill stem, a latch plate pivoted between the plates and having a notch or re cess for receiving the drill stem and for preventing the passage of the collar, and
means for holding the locking plate in engaging position. i
3. A device of the character specified, comprising a pair of plates secured together in spaced relation and having an opening of a size to permit the passage of the holding collar of the drill stem, a latch plate pivoted to swing between the plates and having a notch or recess for receiving the stem and of a size to prevent the passage of the collar, means for locking the latch plate in engaging position, and a ring yieldingly connected to the plates at one face thereof.
4. A. device of the character specified, comprising a pair of plates secured together in spaced relation and having an opening of a size to permit the passage of the holding collar of the drill stem, a latch plate pivoted to swing between the plates and having .a notch or recess for receiving the stem and of a size to prevent the passage of the collar,
and means for locking the latch plate in engaging position.
