Abstract

248,014. Freeman, N. R. Sept. 4, 1924. Mineral oils, extracting.-Shale and other oilbearing earths are heated to render the oil soluble, prior to extracting the oils. The shale is ground to a fine mesh and heated in thin layers . to a temperature of approximately 350‹ F., thus driving off moisture without distilling the oil. The shale may be stirred during the heat treatment, and lime may be added, to prevent volatilization of sulphur. After the heat treatment the shale is treated with an extraction oil not materially volatile under 300‹ F., for example kerosene, and the solution is separated by filtering or in a centrifugal or like machine.
