Abstract
248,012. K³hn, P. Feb. 23, 1925, [Convention date]. Open-hearth furnaces.-In a furnace for smelting and refining iron, steel and other metals, fuel in solid, liquid or gaseous form is injected by burners f at an angle of about 90‹ into a stream of heated air passing through the furnace so that hot short narrow flames are directed on to the charge. The waste gases traverse the rest of the hearth, and then pass through regenerating chambers a, b, and through other adjoining regenerating chambers arranged in series so as to provide an unusually long path for preheating the air for combustion, and thus give up practically the whole of their beat before passing to the chimney, the said heat being utilized for preheating the air for combustion of the fuel, the air passing in opposite direction to the gases. The waste gases are cooled to about 1100‹ C. in traversing the chambers a b and to about 100‹ C. in passing through the other regenerative chambers. The slag formed in the chequer work flows back to the hearth. The fuel used may comprise distillation, lighting and coke oven gases, tar and mineral oils, tar, pulverized coal and mixtures of poor gases with pulverized fuel, distillation gases, &c.
