Abstract
The device guides a saw blade when cutting wood or similar. One plate 1 includes a flange 7 projecting down to hook over the edge of the material being cut. Another plate 2 includes a flange 8 projecting up for the saw to slide along when cutting. Sliding a saw along the flange protects the user's hands while also ensuring that the cut is correctly positioned. Ideally the plates are relatively pivotable 3 so that the angle between the two flanges can be varied, and so the angle of the cut on the material can be varied. The angle can either be varied continuously or in discrete intervals. The angle may be indicated by a scale 2 and marker 5 (fig 1) and may be fixed and released by a nut 4 and bolt 13 in a channel 16.
Description
A SAW GUIDE WITH HAND PROTECTION
The use of "mitre blocks" to aid the hard sawing of discrete lengths from a longitudinal member is well known.
Such devices provide a saw guide for material placed on the device, they do not provide for any finger or hard protection from the cutting saw.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a saw guide that is placed on the member to be cut and to provide angular guidance for the saw as well as to provide some protection for the hand holding the invention and the material to be cut.
In order that the invention may be better understood reference will now be made to the attached figures where: -Fig I shows a general three dimensional view of the invention set to cut at 90° along with a plan view and two side views.
Fig 2 shows the invention set to cut at 45° and placed on a piece of material to be cut.
The drawing shows the view facing the operator and with the operator Fig 3 shows the invention set to cut at 90° and placed on a piece of material to be cut. The invention is held in place by the operator's hand (11) and the material is cut with the saw (9), the handle being at (12).
Fig 4 shows the invention set to 90° and exploded to show the component parts.
Now referring to the drawings the invention comprises a lower member (1) and a upper member (2). The lower member (1) has a male hinge up stand (14) which locates within a hole under the upper member (2) to form a hinge. The hinge is held together by a hinge pin (3). A stud (13) is pushed through a hole (15) in the lower member (1) and arranged for its thread to be projecting above the upper member (2). The stud (13) projects through a radial slot (16) formed in the upper member (2).
The radial movement of the upper member (2) with respect to the lower member (I) is prevented by tightening a clamp nut (4) on to the stud (13).
Fig 3 shows a typical use of the invention where the invention is placed on material to be cut (10), and cut with a saw blade (9) with a saw handle positioned at (12).
The saw is kept in contact with a saw engaging face (8) and the invention is kept in contact with the material to be cut (10) at an engaging face (7) by a operators hand (11). A angular scale reading marker (5) is placed on the lower member (1) and is arranged to read the position of an angular scale (6) that is marked on the upper member (2).
The cutting angle of the saw can be adjusted by loosening the clamp knob (4), adjusting the upper member (2) and the lower member (1) to the required position as read on the angular scale (6) and then re tightening the clamp knob (4). The saw engaging face (8) is arranged to protrude beyond the engaging face to the material to be cut (7) to provide added protection to the operators hand (11) that is holding the invention.
The attached figures show an embodiment of the invention that can be adjusted to cut at angles from 45° to 90°.
In further embodiments of the invention can be arranged to cut at other angles.
In a further embodiment of the invention the engaging face to the material to be cut (7) can be extended downwards to enable material that is circular or has a large radius on the engaging corner to be cut, and further the engaging face (7) can be shaped to match the material to be cut.
In another embodiment of the invention the angular adjustment is arranged to allow only pre set angles such as 45°, 900, 67.5° etc. Accordingly the present invention comprises a device to aid the cutting of material with a hand saw and comprising a downwardly projecting face to engage the edge of the material to be cut, and an upwardly projecting face suitable for engaging the side of the blade of a hand saw and said upward projecting face being arranged to protrude over the top of the said downwardly projecting face in order to enhance protection of the operators hand.
Claims (3)
- CLAIMS1) A device to aid the cutting of matenal with a hand saw and comprising a downwardly projecting face to engage the edge of the material to be cut, and an upwardly projecting face suitable for engaging the side of the blade of a hand saw and said upward projecting face being arranged to protrude out the top of the said downwardly projecting face in order to enhance protection of the operators hand.
- 2) A device as claimed in claim 1 where the angle between the downwardly projecting face and the upwardly projecting face of angle can be varied in fixed steps.
