1 Claim.
This invention relates in general to a carpenters tool and in particular the invention is directed to an improved miter gauge and saw guide in combination.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a combination miter gauge and saw guide which is light weight as well as portable and adapted to be engaged with a board regardless of its length or size, and to gauge the cut and guide the saw. The present tool can be used by a carpenter on a job for cutting relatively long rafters, molding or the like and which could not be readily cut in a common miter box.
Another object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character described which has a large range and can be adjusted to make a straight or miter right angle cut, or to make a straight or miter bevel cut as desired,
It is also an object of the invention to provide a combination miter gauge and saw guide which, when not in use, may be folded into a compact unit and thus carried in a carpenters tool box without occupying too much space.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan of the tool in position on a board and adjusted for a miter cut.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the tool in such position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawing, the tool comprises a work engaging rail l which is T shaped in section; such rail being formed at one end with a substantially circular index disc 2 which extends laterally from the rail top and in the same plane. Another disc 3, of less diameter than disc 2, is pivoted on the latter concentric therewith by means of pin 4. A relatively narrow, fiat arm 5 is formed integral with disc 3 and projects therefrom with its outer edge, as shown in dotted line in Fig, 1, parallel to but outwardly of a line tangent to the periphery of disc 2.
A normally upstanding rectangular plate 8 is secured by spaced hinges l to arm 5 whereby the plate may swing from a position at right angles to the arm to any desired angle or may be folded fiat against said arm; the pivotal axis of said hinges being disposed in alinement with and immediately adjacent the outer edge of arm 5. The plate is of a length to extend from the outer end of the arm to a point some distance beyond the inner end thereof, as shown.
The plate is normally held in an upstanding it) but adjustable position by means of an adjustment quadrant which comprises a pair of slotted and arcuate members 8 overlapping at adjacent ends and secured together by a clamping bolt 9 which extends through the registering slots. The 35 lower member of the quadrant is connected at it lower end by hinge ill on the disc 3, while the other member of the quadrant is connected by hinge ii to the back of plate 6.
Another plate l2, of less length than plate 6,
is secured to the upper edge of said plate 6 and depends in front thereof in spaced but parallel relation so as to form a saw guide channel l3.
Both the disc 3 and one of the members 8 are calibrated in degrees and arranged so that the same may be read against an arrow on disc 2 and the adjacent end of the other member 8 respectively whereby the tool may be preadjusted to any desired angle of out. A locking bolt it holds the discs 2 and 3 in selected relative posiat I tion, while bolt 9 likewise holds members 8.
After the tool has been adjusted to the desired angle of cut, the rail i is engaged with one edge portion of the work W in the manner shown in the drawing. Thereafter, while the tool is held as pitch of braces, posts, rafters, etc., or to determine the grade of bridges or other structures.
When not in use, arm 5 is disposed in alinement with rail l, bolt 9 is removed from members B and such members folded fiat against the disc 3 and plate 6 respectively, and then plate 6 is w folded so as to lie flat on top of arm 5. As so folded, the tool is a compact substantially flat unit and occupies a minimum of space when placed in a carpenter's tool box.
From the foregoing description it will be read- 88 The tool may also be so ily seen that I have substantially fulfills the objects of asset forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preterred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A foldable saw guide comprising a work engaging rail, a disc turnably mounted on the rail, an arm rigid with the disc disposed in a vertical produced such a. device as the invention plane parallel to and above the rail for folding onto the same by rotation of the disc, a saw guide plate upstanding from and hinged onto the arm for folding movement over the disc, a quadrant member hinged at one end on the disc for folding movement so as to lie adjacent and substantially parallel to the disc, said member being free at the other end, a cooperating quadrant member hinged at one end onto the guide plate for I folding movement against the same and free at the other end, the members normally overlapping each other, and a removable clamping unit normally holding the members against separation and relative circumferential movement.
