Abstract

A display unit with convexly curved display faces F1, B1, B2 is formed from at least one sheet of a substantially rigid and foldable material divided into a plurality of panels F1, B1, B2, S1 by crease lines. A strut panel S1 is provided which is foldable so that it extends perpendicularly between the display faces to hold them in their curved configuration by exerting a lateral pressure on the display faces. The unit is collapsible and may be stored and shipped flat and erected by virtue of the strut panel attached down the centre of one of the panels. The strut panel may be integral with the sheet of material or it may be adhered in place (G2, Fig. 6). The ends of the display sheet may be glued together G1, or at ab and slot type fastening (T1-4, Fig. 10) may be provided.

Introduction and Background to the invention.

The present invention relates to a display unit comprising of at least one display sheet of a substantially rigid and foldable material divided into a plurality of panels by crease lines that forms a display unit with at least one convex presentation face.

Convex cardboard display units have a substantial part of the advertising display, point of sale markets around the world. They are temporary information displays typically used to promote new products or special offers and come in a wide variety of sizes from counter top to floor standing variants.

Some convex displays are rigid and some come collapsed. Some automatically assemble with a pop-up effect using elastic rubber bands as tensioning devices.

Examples of automatically assembling convex display units that rely on rubber bands to automatically erect are disclosed in EP 1830 334 Al (Fernando Mestres Armengol) and also EP1395971 (Francois l'Hotel) and W02007138083 (Jonathan Arthur), which are folded horizontally not only for convenience but to prevent them self-erecting in storage and transit. When assembled these folds detract from the final visual appeal but even small versions of EPI 395971 and W020071 38083, which are easily portable and would not normally need to be folded, require these folds to keep them from automatically erecting.

Automatic erecting convex displays are complex to manufacture, requiring much hand assembly to install elastic bands and the substructure that holds the elastic bands in place. All this work is hidden from view and contributes nothing to the visual impact but adds considerably to the carbon footprint and the cost of production. When the display is disposed of, the rubber has to be separated from the board for recycling.

Although designed to auto-erect, in practice these auto displays often need help with light lateral pressure applied to their edges to start the erection process and the pop-up effect. This is particularly so if the display is large or has been in storage for a while under poor conditions, which may have reduced the elasticity of the rubber bands.

Statement of Invention.

The invention sets out to create the simplest of collapsible convex displays that may be capable of being erected quickly and easily without the use of elastic bands and also being capable of being manufactured automatically using standard box making machinery such as an inline folder-gluer.

The convex display is formed from at least one sheet of substantially rigid, foldable and bendable material, having a display face and being divided into a plurality of panels delimited from adjacent panels by crease lines.

Unlike EP 1830 334 Al, EP1 395971 and W02007l 38083 the convex display is not designed to automatically erect but requires inward pressure to be applied to the two folded edges of the display in order to release the Strut Panel (Sl) which may unfold into position by virtue of the tension in the folded board being released or may be placed in position at right angles to the tangent of the curve that it forces into the Front Panel (Fl) and the Back Panel (Bi) or the two half Back Panels (BI and B2) by virtue of its position attached down the middle of the Front Panel (Fl) or Back Panel (BI) or where the Left and Right Half Back Panels (Bi and B2) meet.

One embodiment of the invention, particularly suitable for entirely automatic manufacture in a single pass, employs a Front Panel (Fl) and a Back Left Half Panel (Bi) and a Back Right Half Panel (B2) either of which maybe attached to a Strut Panel (Si) and joined to each other by an overlapping stitch or glue seam (Gi) or an arrangement of Tabs and Slots (Ti and T2, Figure 9) Variant Two (Expanding Plan Views Figure 5, Front Expanding Views Figure 6, Back View Figure 7, Panel layout Figure 8.

Another embodiment of the invention employs a Front Panel (Fl) and a Back Panel (B1)fixed together by a stitch or glue seam (Gi) or an arrangement of Tabs and Slots (Ti and T2, Figure 10).
