Bottling; stoppering.-In a machine for closing milk bottles &c. the bottles are held below a carrier provided with recesses for the reception of the closing discs or caps and the bottles and the carrier are moved together below means which supply the carrier with discs &c. and apply them to the bottles through the recesses in the carrier. The machine may be adapted to fill the bottles as they approach the closure feeding and applying devices. A base 2 supports, a column 1 rotated continuously by a shaft 4 and provided with a platform 5 carrying bottle supports 6 which are engaged by a cam track 47 to raise the bottles 12 into engagement with throats 11 disposed in recesses 10 in a carrier or ring 7 secured to a boss 9 on the column 1. Milk from a tank 24 is supplied through pipes 25 and three-way valves 14 supported by the boss 9 to measuring vessels 26 when spouts 15 secured to the valves are in the position indicated in full lines. When a bottle is placed on a rest 6 it moves aside a spring-pressed lever 21 mounted on the platform 5, the movement bringing a distance piece 20 on the other end of the lever into alignment with rods 16, 17 so that when the rod 17 is raised by a cam track 19 the rod 16 moves the corresponding spout to the position shown in dotted line and the milk in the measuring vessel 26 flows into the bottle, the valve 14 cutting off its communication with the tank 24. As the bottle approaches the closuring devices, the spout is moved to its original position to permit its measuring vessel to be refilled. The bottle and carrier move beneath disc reservoirs 29, which place a disc in the recess 10 just prior to its passage beneath an applying plunger 34 operated by a lever 40 which receives a, sharp knock from a spring-actuated rod 42 controlled by a cam 45 on the shaft 4. The plunger 34 is carried by a plate 35 resiliently supported on levers 37 free to move sideways on their pivots to allow for movement of the carrier 7 during the closing operation, the plunger and its associated parts being mounted on a bracket 31 supported by an independent standard 33. Excessive horizontal displacement of the plunger operates trip gear to stop the machine.
