Abstract
A composite insulating panel 1, particularly to provide a more efficient system for cladding a building, comprising a translucent upper sheet 2 and a lower sheet 4 between which is an insulating body 5, a solar collector 10 is located between the upper sheet and the insulating body. The solar collector may comprise a flexible material and may extend across the whole width of the panel or may be in the form of strips. The upper sheet may have raised portions into which the solar collector may extend. The solar collector may be adhesively bonded to the upper sheet. There may also be a barrier such as a film between the solar collector and the insulating body. There may be projections at the sides that underlap or overlap with adjacent panels.

The strips may extend transversely across the panel. Alternatively or additionally the strips extend longitudinally along the panel.
In one embodiment the outer sheet comprises raised portions. In this case the solar collector may extend into the raised portions. Alternatively the solar collector does not extend into the raised portions.
In one embodiment the solar collector is mounted to the inner face of the upper sheet.
In one embodiment the solar collector is adhesively bonded to the inner face of the upper sheet. The adhesive is preferably translucent. The adhesive may be provided over substantially all of the inner face of the upper sheet to which the solar collector is applied.

Detailed Description
Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1 to 3 thereof there is illustrated an insulating panel 1 according to the invention comprising a translucent first or outer sheet 2, a second or inner sheet 4 with an insulating body, in this case an insulating foam 5 therebetween. The foam may, for example be a S...
polyisocyanurate foam or a phenolic foam. In this case the panel 1 is a roof panel *5** 1 comprising a profiled external sheet 2 of a plastics material. The sheet 2 may : ** comprise a polycarbonate material which is relatively strong and durable. The S...
profile in this case comprises a plurality of projections, in this case raised crowns 3. The crowns 3 in this case are of generally trapezoidal form and extend longitudinally along the length of the panel. There is a side underlap projection or * : * crown 30 on one side of the upper sheet 2 and a side overlap projection or crown 31 on the opposite side of the panel. In use, adjacent like panels are overlapped by overlapping the overlap crown 31 of one panel with the underlap crown of an adjacent panel. Similarly, the panels typically have end underlap and overlap features for end lapping of adjacent like panels. The inner metal liner sheet 4 may be of painted galvanised steel. A solar collector 10 in the form of a flexible photovoltaic material is provided between upper sheet 2 and the insulation body.
The solar collector may extend into the crowns [Figs. 1 to 3] or may be laid in strips 20 [Figs. 4, 5] along andlor across the sheet 2. The solar collector 10 is preferably flexible to follow at least part of the profile of the upper sheet 2. -4.-
The panel of the invention has an integrated solar collector 10 to extract solar energy. The solar collector is protected by the polycarbonate top sheet 2. The polycarbonate external sheet 2 provides structural integrity to the panel whilst protecting the photovoltaic solar collector 10 during transportation as well as during installation and in use.
The photovoltaic roofing panels of the invention may be connected to an electrical system using known technologies.
The composite panels of the invention may be manufactured on a continuous production line by leading the outer sheet 2 along a flat bed with the recesses defined by the crowns 3 facing upwards. The solar collector 10 is then laid on the inside face of the polycarbonate sheet 2. The profiled polycarbonate sheet 2 with the solar collector 10 in situ is led to a lay-down area at which liquid foam reactants are spread across the sheet 2 using a lay-down poker or the like. The solar collector 10 may be adhesively bonded to the inner face of the exposed polycarbonate sheet 2. The adhesive is preferably translucent to maximise solar penetration. The adhesive may be applied fully or partially at the interface between the top sheet 2 and the solar collector 10. The adhesive may be applied to the inner face of the upper sheet during manufacture to ensure that the solar collector 10 is positively located. The adhesive may be discontinuous, for example in strips or spots to maximise solar penetration. In some cases a backing barrier may be provided between the underside of the solar collector 20 and the insulating foam 5. The barrier may, for example be in the form of a film or the like to at least partially isolate the solar collector 20 from the foam and thereby minimum heating effects caused by the foam during manufacture. The barrier may be pre-applied to the face of the solar collector 20 which is exposed to the insulating foam 5.
It will be appreciated that the invention may be applied to a wide range of panels including roof panels, wall panels, and/or floor panels. Maximum solar efficiency is however generally achieved by covering a building with roof panels of the invention.
The panels may be used to construct part of or all of the building envelope including part or all of one or more of the roof, walls and floor.
Many variations on the embodiments described will be readily apparent.

- Claims 1. A composite insulating panel comprising an upper sheet, a lower sheet and an insulating body between the upper sheet and the lower sheet wherein the upper sheet is of a translucent material and a solar collector is provided between the upper sheet and the insulation body.
- 2. A composite panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the solar collector comprises a flexible material.
- 3. A composite panel as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the solar collector extends substantially the width of the panel.
