Abstract
246,001. Lawson, O. L. May 20, 1925. Nailing, hand tools for; loose-nailing. - A tacking device for operating on boot soles is provided with means to curve the point of the tack as it enters the work. In the hand tacker shown in Fig. 4, the usual plunger 11 spring held in a casing 10 carries a driver member 12 on which is loosely mounted a sleeve 19 normally held downwardly against a pin 12<x> bv a spring 26. Pivoted to the sleeve 19 are spring held tack jaws 31, 31<x> the lower ends of which are shaped as shown in Fig. 6. Tacks are fed one at a time to the jaws 31, 31<x> from the usual raceway 22 by a separator 30, the arm of which is operated by the pin 12<x> on the driver 13. An arm 36 pivoted to the jaw 31<x> is adapted to be moved by a cam 38 so that its lower, curved end contacts with the lower curved part 42 of the jaw 31. When the plunger 11 is operated the jaws 31, 31<x> are lowered, by pressure of the spring 26, to engage the work, the cam 38 operating the arm 36 to bend the point of the tack against the curved surface 42. The member 12 then descends further against the spring 26 and the driver 13 drives the tack which is continuously curved by the surface 42. The tack jaws are permitted to yield at this time for the passage of the driver as stops on the jaws have disengaged from stop surfaces on the casing 10. In a modification, the tack jaws do not move downwardly to engage the work, and the arm 36 is dispensed with, the lower ends of both tack jaws being curved and grooved in order to bend the tack. The separator is operated by a separate member carried by the plunger 11. In another modification, the tack guiding jaws are angularly disposed with respect to the passage-way for the driver.
