This invention relates to machines for inserting fastenings, and is herein illustrated asv embodied in a lasting machine having means for forming and driving staples vto fasten shoe uppers in lasted `position, this application being a Vdivision of a copending parent application, Serial No. 138,300, filed on September 28, 1926. It is, however, to be understoodthat the invention is not 'limited to lasting machines nor to machines for utilizing staples as the fastenings.
4The present invention relates more particularly to the control of the driver whereby the fastenings are driven into the work. The machine herein shown includes in its organization a spring-operated driver and a nozzle or guide for the fastenings which is moved toward the work prior to the driving of each fastening. In such an organization it is convenient, as herein illustrated, to uti# lize the movement of the nozzle member or guide toward the work to tension the spring whereby the driver is operated. The invention provides novel means for accomplishing this result and for also controlling the release of the driver or spring to effect the insertion ,of the fastening. ln the construction shown the spring is thusreleased after the nozzle member has completed its movement toward the work by means which is operative independently of that movement. Such control of the driving means in an organization of the particular character herein illustrated is especially appropriate, since keach staple is formed in a'location out of h alinement with the driver by the movement of the nozzle member toward the work and is transferred into alinement with the driver after the completion of that movement, so
that it is necessary to allow an appreciable time between the movement of the nozzle member and the operation of the driver' for the transfer of the staple.
The invention will now be more particularly described by reference to the accompanying drawings and thereafter pointed out in the claims.

Since the machine as a whole is fully shown and described in the parent application, only such parts as it is necessary to refer to for an understanding of the present invention will be herein described in detail. It will be understood that the shoe is presented by the operator in position for lasting in each location where that operation is to be performed along the sides of the shoe, the machine being provided with a work rest 10 which in operating, for example, on shoes of the welt type, as illustrated in Fig. 4, engages the lip a of the insole in each lasting location and serves as an anvil to clinch a staple s driven through the upper and the insole lip to fasten the upper in lasted position. Prior to the fastening operation the upper is pulled over the last by a gripper 12 having upper-gripping jaws 14, and is laid inwardly over the feather and against the lip of the insole by a member 16 which serves as a nozzle or guide for the staple. The nozzle member 16 is supported on a carrier 18 which is movable along a forwardly and downwardly inclined guideway provided by a bracket member 20 (Fig. 1) adjustable on the head of the machine by means of a screw`22 and secured in adjusted position by screws 24, this bracket member serving as a support for the work rest 10. It will be understood that by movement of the carrier 18 along its guideway the staple-guiding nozzle 16 is carried toward and from the work rest 10 and the work positioned thereby and is operated in its movement toward the work rest to lay the upper over the insole as above described. The carrier'18 lis operated by a path cam 26 in engagement with a roll 28 on the carrier.
Also mounted on the carrier 18 isthe stapledriving 'mechanism 'comprising a driver 30 (F ig. 2) and its operating means hereinafter described, a portion of mechanism with which the machine is provided for forming each staple in a location out of alinement with the driver by the forward movement of the carrier toward the work, and also means for transferring the staple into alinement with the driver after the carrier has completed its movement toward the work and prior to the operative movement of the driver. Thatportion of the staple-forming mechanism which is movable with the carrier 18 includes an outside former 32 (F 3) which cooperates with a stationary inside former 34 mounted on the bracket member 2O and located above the path of movement of the driver 30. It will thus be seen that the staple is formed in a location above the path of movement of the driver by the forward movement of the carrier 18 andthe nozzle member 16, and that after the carrier has completed its forward movement the staple must be transferred into alinement with the driver prior to the operation of the driver. To effect the transfer of the staple the outside former 32 is utilized, this former being mounted on the lower end of a slide 36 movable in a guideway in the carrier 18 in directions at right angles to the path of movement of the driver 30.- For operating the slide 36 there is provided a bell-crank lever 38 pivotally mounted on the head of the machine, one arm of this bellcrank being connected by a link 40 to the slide 36 and the other arm being provided with a roll 42 engaged by a peripheral cam 44. A spring 46 acts on the bell-crank to impart staple-transferring movement to the slide 36, and the cam acts to return the slide and the outside former into staple-forming position. For limiting the staple-transferring movement of the slide 36. the carrier 18 is provided with a stop screw 48 in position to be engaged by a lug 50 on the slide. Details of the staple-forming and transferring means. are more fully illustrated and del scribed in the parent application.
The driver 30 is carried by a slide 52 (Fig. 2) mounted in a guideway formed in a member 54 fast on the carrier 18. For operating the slide 52 there is provided an arm 56` which at its upper end is pivoted ou a stud 58 on the carrier 18 and at its lower end has a bearing in a recessin the slide. The arm 56 is operated to impart staple-drivingr movement to the driver 30 by a torsion spring 60 one end of which is connected to a member 62 which may be turned to adjust the tension of the spring and is held in adjusted position by a pin 64 arranged to enter any one of a series of holes 66 formed in a member 68 fast on the stud 58. To limit driving movement of the arm56 there is provided a fibre washer 70 (Fig. 2) which is adjustable by a screw 7 2 mounted in a split bracket Z4 on the carrier 18, a screw 76 being provided for effecting relative movement of the two parts of the split bracket to bind the screw 72 in adjusted position.
For controlling the arm 56 in such manner as to tension the spring 60 and to retract the driver preparatory to the staple-driving operation, there is pivoted at 78 (Fig. 2) on the head of the machine a lever 8O on which is pivotally mounted at 82 a latch 84 for engaging the lower end of al plate 86 fast on the arm 56. A spring 88 connected at one end to the latch 84 and at.its other end to a pin 90 on the lever 8() tends to hold the latch in position to engage the plate 86. It will thus he evident that when the carrier 18 receives its forward movement to carry the staple nozzle 16 toward the shoe, the arm 56 is held hack by the latch 84, so that the driver 30 does not move forwardly with the carrier and accordingly the spring 60 is teusioned by the movement of the carrier. For operating the latch 84 to release the arm 56 for the staple-driving operation, the carrier 18 is provided with an adjustable screw 92 the head of which is arranged to engage and operate a finger 94 projecting from the latch. rl`he forward movement of the carrier, however, does not carry the screw far enough to act on the linger 94, since it is necessary to allow time for the transferring of the staple after the carrier has arrived at the end of its forward movement. Release of the arm 56 is accordingly effected in response to a movement of the lever 8() such as to cause the screw 92 to act on the finger 94 to disconnect the latch 84 from the plate 86, this movement of the lever being effected by a path cam 96 in engagement with a roll 98 on the lever. It will be evident that in this movement of the lever 80 the arm 56 is re tracted to some extent against the resistance of its spring 60 before it is released. 1n the return of the parts to starting positions the latch 84 if; engaged by a stop shoulder 100 on the lever 80 to hold it in position to connect again with the plate 86 when the carrier 18 arrives at the end of its retractive movement.
It. will thus be seen that the forward movement of the carrier 18 and t-he staple nozzle 16 is utilized to tension the driver-operating spring 60 and to cause the driver to be retracted relatively to the staple nozzle to permit the staple to be transferred into alinement with it, and also that means operative independently of the movement of the carrier and the nozzle is provided for thereafter releasing the driver spring, so that time is allowed after the completion of the forward movement of the carrier and the nozzle for the transfer of the formed staple prior to the operation of the driver.
Having described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination With Work-positioning means, of a nozzle member for guiding fastenings into the Work, means for moving said mem- 'ber toward the Work, a driver for the fastenlngs, operating means for said driver comv prising a spring arranged to be tensioned by the movement of the nozzle member toward the Work, and mechanism for releasing said spring to render it operative after the nozzle member has completed its movementJ tovvard the Work.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination With Work-positioning means, of a nozzle member for guiding fastenings into the Work, means for moving said member toward the Work, a driver for the fastenings, operating means for said driver comprising a spring arranged to be tensioned by the movement of the nozzle member toward the Work, and mechanism automatically operative independently of the movement of the nozzle member to release said spring for the operation of the driver.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with Work-positioning means, of a guide for fastenings movable toward thc Work, a driver, a spring for operating said driver, means for tensioning said spring by the movement of the guide toward the Work, and means constructed and arranged to operate independently of said movement oi the guide after the completion of that movement to release the spring for the operation of the driver.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination with Work-positioning means, of a guide for astenings movable toward the Work, a driver arranged to operate in said guide, a spring for operating said driver, means for tensioning said spring in response to the movement of the guide toward the .vork, means for thus moving the guide, and additional means for releasing the spring independently of the movement of the guide.
5. In a machine of the class described, the combination with Work-positioning means, of a guide for astenings movable toward the Work, a driver arranged to operate 1n said guide, a spring for operating said driver, a latch for tensioning said spring in response to the movement of the guide toward the Work, means Jfor thus moving the guide, and means for operating said latch to release the spring after the guide has completed its moven ment tovva-rd the Work.
6. 11. In a machine of the class described, the combination With Work-positioning means, of a staple-gniding member movable toward the Work, a staple driver, means for forming a staplein a location ont of alinement with the driverV by the movement of the staple-guiding member toward the Work7 means for transferring the staple into alinement with the driver` after the completion of that movement,l driver-operating means comprising' a spring' arranged to be tensioned by said movement of the staple-guiding member, and means for releasing the spring for the operation of the dri-ver after the transferrinl ot the staple In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification.
