Description
A FINISHING MATERIAL AND
AELATED CONSTRUCTIONAL ARTICLE This invention relates to a finishing matenal, in particular but not exclusively, a finishing material for use in building construction, and a related constructional article.
During construction of a building pre-constructed finishing substrates, such as plasterboard panels, polystyrene panels, and fibreboard panels, are secured to stud walls, block work, or ceiling joists to define finished walls and ceilings.
Often it is necessary to fix secondary items, such as socket boxes and light fittings, to the finishing substrates using one or more fastening members, such as screws. However, the core of the finishing substrates is weak, and so offers poor retention of a screw and little resistance to axial withdrawal of the screw.
As a result it is necessary to insert an intermediate fastener into the finishing substrate to receive and support a screw and improve the retention and resistance to axial withdrawal of the screw The need for such intermediate fasteners adds to the complexity of installing secondary items, and so increases the time needed to install these items and the cost of doing so.
There is a need, therefore, for an improved finishing material and a related constructional article each of which obviates the need for an intermediate fastener According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a laminated finishing material, for use in building construction, comprising: a pre-constructed finishing substrate; and a planar support member bonded with the finishing substrate, the support member being engagable with a screw passing through the finishing substrate to retain the screw relative to the finishing substrate and prevent axial withdrawal of the screw from the finishing substrate.
The inclusion of a planar support member bonded with a finishing substrate reinforces the finishing substrate to allow for retention of a screw without the need for an intermediate fastener. As a result a user is able to insert a screw through the finishing substrate and into the support member to prevent axial withdrawal of the screw, and so allow the secure fixing of a secondary item to the laminated finishing material According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided an unattached constructional article comprising a pre-constructed finishing substrate defining at least one face having bonded thereto a support member in the form of a generally rigid sheet which in use of the article engages and grips part of a fastening member, inserted through the finishing substrate so as to retain the fastening member and prevent its withdrawal from the finishing substrate.
The constructional article shares the advantages of the laminated finishing material, and is also portable, i.e readily moveable from one location to another.
Preferably the pre-constructed finishing substrate is one of a plasterboard panel, a polystyrene panel, and a fibreboard panel. Such panels are widely used in building construction, and so the provision of a finishing material and a constructional article including such a panel, in which it is possible to secure a screw so as to prevent axial withdrawal of the screw, without the need for an intermediate fixture or secondary processing, drastically reduces the time and cost of fixing secondary items in a building.
Optionally the support member is mechanically bonded with the finishing substrate.
Preferably the support member is chemically bonded with the finishing substrate.
in a preferred embodiment of the invention the support member is bonded with the finishing substrate by an adhesive.
Such arrangements provide a convenient manner of bonding the support member with the finishing substrate such that a user need carry out no secondary processing steps.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention the laminated finishing material includes a support member having a plurality of perforations, each perforation being engagable with a screw passing through the finishing substrate to retain the screw relative to the finishing substrate and prevent axial withdrawal of the screw from the finishing substrate.
Optionally the unattached constructional article includes a support member in the form of a generally rigid, perforated mesh sheet one or more perforations of which in use of the article each engages and grips part of a fastening member, inserted through the finishing substrate so as to retain the fastening member and prevent its withdrawal from the finishing substrate.
The inclusion of one or more perforations in the support member provides at least one possible retention site for receiving and retaining a screw or other fastening member without the need for any secondary processing steps by a user The support member may include a uniform arrangement of perforations. As a result of such a configuration a user is readily able to determine the positioning of the perforations, and so is readily able to engage a screw with a given perforation to retain the screw in a desired location.
Optionally the perforations are arranged in rows with each row being offset from the or each adjacent row. Such an arrangement allows for a dense packing of the perforations, thereby further increasing the likelihood of a user being able to engage a screw with a perforation in a desired location.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention the support member includes a plurality of uniform perforations. The provision of a plurality of uniform perforations ensures that each of the finishing material and the constructional article is useable with screws of a predefined range of sizes.
In a further preferred embodiment of the invention one or more perforations differs in size from the other perforations. The inclusion of such a feature allows for tailoring of different regions of the finishing material and the constructional article to receive and engage screws of a given size according to the fixing requirement.
Preferably the support member is thinner than the finishing substrate.
Optionally the support member is at least ten times thinner than the finishing substrate.
The foregoing features help to allow use of the laminated finishing material and the constructional article alongside conventional pre-constructed finishing substrates with negligible difference between the extent to which the laminated finishing material and the constructional article protrude from a support surface such as a stud or ceiling joist, and the extent to which a conventional finishing substrate protrudes from the support surface.
There now follows a brief description of a preferred embodiment of the invention, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view from a first side of a laminated finishing material and an unattached constructional article according to embodiments of the invention; and Figure 2 shows a perspective view from a second side of the finishing material and the unattached constructional article shown in Figure 1.
A laminated finishing material according to a first embodiment of the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 10.
The finishing material 10 includes a pre-constructed finishing substrate 12, which in the embodiment shown is a plasterboard panel 14 Other embodiments of the invention (not shown) may include a different pie-constructed finishing substrate, such as a polystyrene panel or a fibreboard panel, both of which may be used in a ceiling of a building.
The finishing material 10 also includes a planar, i.e. flat and lying in one plane, support member 16 which is bonded with a non-display surface 24 of the finishing substrate 12, i.e. the surface which during use faces the stud, joist or block work to which the finishing substrate 12 is fixed Preferably the support member 16 covers the majority of the non-display surface 24 of the finishing substrate 12.
In the embodiment shown the support member 16 is chemicafly bonded with the plasterboard 14 using an adhesive. Suitable adhesives include contact adhesives and thermoplastic adhesives, such as a hot-melt adhesive Desirably the adhesive is applied to the support member 16 which is then brought into contact with the plasterboard 14, or other finishing substrate 12 Other embodiments of the invention (not shown) may include a support member 16 that is mechanically bonded with the finishing substrate 12. Examples of mechanical bonding include a frame extending around the perimeter of the finishing material 10 to interconnect the support member 16 and the finishing substrate 12, together with mechanical fasteners such as clips, nuts and bolts, and screws The support member 16 includes a plurality of circular perforations 18, each of which is engagabie with a fastening member, such as a screw 20, to retain the screw 20 relative to the finishing substrate 12 and prevent axial withdrawal of the screw 20 form the finishing substrate 12. Other embodiments of the invention (not shown) may include perforations having a different shape. such as square, oblong or triangle.
In the embodiment shown, the support member 16 includes a uniform arrangement of essentially identical perforations 18 having a diameter of 2.5mm. The perforations 18 are arranged in rows 22 with the centres of adjacent perforations 18 spaced apart by 3 5mm.
Adjacent rows 22 are spaced from another by 1mm, with the perforations 18 in each row 22 being offset from the perforations 18 in the adjacent row 22. In particular, the centre of each perforation 18 is aligned with the mid-point between adjacent perforations 18 in the adjacent row 22. Such an arrangement permits a density of approximately 4000 perforations 18 per square metre of finishing material 10.
Further embodiments of the invention (not shown) may include a differing arrangement of perforations, which may also differ in size to those set out above. The diameter of the perforations 18 preferably ranges in size from 1mm to 6mm.
Still further embodiments of the invention (not shown) may include one or more perforations that differ in size from the other perforations.
Other embodiments of the invention (not shown) may also include a support member initially having no perforations. Instead a user creates a perforation, as desired, when driving a screw or other fastening member through the finishing substrate and the support member to have the support member retain the screw or fastening member and prevent its withdrawal from the finishing substrate.
Preferably the support member 16 is made from a metal such as steel, or a plastics material. The support member 16 may be plated, galvanised, or painted to provide suitable environmental protection, as desired In the embodiment shown, the support member 16 is thinner than the plasterboard 14 with which it is bonded. More particularly the support member 16 has a thickness of 0.9mm while the plasterboard 14 has a thickness of 9mm. In other embodiments of the invention (not shown) the ratio of thicknesses of the support member 16 and the pre-constructed finishing substrate 12 may differ.
In use, a user inserts a screw 20 through the display surface 26 of the pie-constructed finishing substrate 12, I e. the exposed surface following installation, and into a corresponding perforation 18 in the support member 16 bonded to the non-display surface 24 of the finishing substrate 12. The perforation 18 enages with the screw 20 to retain the screw 20 relative to the finishing substrate 12 and prevent axial withdrawal of the screw 20 form the finishing substrate 12.
An unattached constructional article according to another embodiment of the invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 30. Preferably the constructional article is in the form of a discrete panel.
The constructional article 30 includes a pre-constructed finishing substrate 12 which in the embodiment shown is a plasterboard panel 14. The finishing substrate 12 defines at least one face 32 that has bonded thereto a support member 16 in the form of a generally rigid, perforated mesh 34 In use, one or more perforations 18 of the mesh 34 engages and grips part of a fastening member 36 e g. a screw 20. inserted through the finishing substrate 12, so as to retain the fastening member 36 and prevent its withdrawal from the finishing substrate 12.
In other embodiments of the invention (not shown) the constructional article includes a support member in the form of a generally rigid sheet.
