Abstract

245,523. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., (Union Switch & Signal Co.). Oct. 10, 1924. Selenium cells. - A selfcontained light-operated relay comprises a filament H surrounded by a tube E of lightsensitive material such as selenium. As shown in Fig. 1, the filament H is contained in a glass bulb 7, and the tube E lies between tubular electrodes 10, 11, the inner being perforated. A tube of translucent gold-leaf may be interposed between the tube E and the inner electrode 10, or may take the place of the perforated electrode. Fig. 5 shows a form in which the tube E and electrodes 10, 11 are supported in the glass bulb 7, which is evacuated or filled with an inert gas. The bulb 7 has end-plugs 8 by means of which connections are made to the relay, and it may be supported in the holder shown in Fig. 6. A single filament may be used with several light-sensitive tubes. The relay may control a lamp circuit directly as in Fig. 1, or through transformers as in Fig. 2.
