Abstract

A wind chest for a pipe organ is pivotably mounted via a pair of swinging bracket 8 and 9. Bracket 8 may be affixed to a floor board 14 via fixing means 13. A bearing member 11 may be provided in said bracket. A corresponding bracket or flange 9 may be affixed to said windchest wherein a spigot or projection 10 may engage with said bearing member 11. The pair of brackets allow the windchest to be swung through an arc to permit maintenance or repair to said windchest.

Description

1 2454501 Title Wind chest swing
Background
This device relates to a wind chest during the process of sealing.
A wind chest is an air-ducting complex of a pipe organ. It is supplied by air trunks with low air pressure and conducts the incoming air through pallet slots into grooves and from there through pallet holes and slide holes to the pipes.
The bars, which divide the grooves inside a windchest, must be absolutely sealed that no incoming air is being released into one of the neighbour grooves on either side.
After a couple of years the bars are usually getting untight. Matter to the fact that wood is always working some glued parts brake open, wood splits and that builds little gaps that give way to neighbour grooves. A cipher occurs. Pipes are playing that shouldn't play. Those wind chests are being removed from the organ and all grooves are filled with glue completely. The glue is released shortly after the filling. The grooves are usually sealed by then. New build chests are filled too with glue after checking and findingthe grooves being not tight.
During the process of repairing, all pallets are removed and all holes, except the pallet slots, are closed by dowels and wedges. The grooves need to be filled with glue via the pallet slots. To make sure that the glue fills each gap inside a groove all air must come out of the groove. Therefor the wind chest is to be lifted more than 45 ° end.
Now the glue attaches to each face of the bars and each corner inside the grooves.
The heavy weight of the chest, from 100 lb. (50 kg) up to around 300 lb. (150 kg) requires at last two or three workers for this procedure.
Statement of invention
To reduce the amount of workers and to make the work of filling all edges inside the grooves more precise, the wind chest is screwed on either of both sides to a flange that leads to ajoint which allows spin motion in one dimension. The position of the flanges is at the middle of the wind chest sides. The flanges have set in bolts. After the flanges are screwed to the wind chest, two stands with a set in ball barring take in the bolt of the flange. The stands then will be fixed stiff to a board, trestles or the floor.
To make sure, the wind chest is not going to slip out of the stands, the floor board to which the stands are fixed must be stable.
Advantages The wind chest swing will ease the process of sealing. One worker will be enough for the procedure of lifting and lowering the chest, to bring it into a position over 45 ° and to fill each groove with glue properly. Less workers are needed and the worker can increase the angle without a problem.
Preferably the two joints are mounted on trestles for getting a proper working high.
Preferably the stands are built in short to save space for working on site.
Drawings Figure 1 shows a wind chest with all its major segments.
Figure 2 shows the wind chest swing according to the invention.
Figure 3 shows the flange and stand of the wind chest swing.
Figure 1 shows a typical wind chest 1 with top bottom board 2 and top board 3, usually glued to the bottom and top of the frame 4 and bars 5, visible through a cut out in the drawing. The frame 4 with bars 5 that are set stiff into the frame. The back 4b and in the front 4a enclose a spare room 6 between each bar 5, the "grooves". The side 4c with the point 7 at which the flange is to be attached.
Figure 2 shows a wind chest 1 and the stands 8. A flange 9 that is mounted to the wind chest I with screws 12. Stands 8 that take in the bolts 10 of the flanges 9. Stands 8 that are fixed with screws 13 to a floor board 14. An arrow 15a that demonstrates the spin motion of the chest at the axis. An arrow 15b that demonstrates the up and down movement of the chest I on one end.
Figure 3 shows a flange 9 with a set in bolt and four screws 12 for mounting it on a chest 1. A stand 8 with a set in ball bearing 11 and screws 13 for mounting it on the floorboard 14.
