Abstract
To avoid unauthorised entry to an operator control panel (3) for entering control parameters to a driver for machinery a fob or token (10) is provided which transmits an authorisation code. If the code is correct and matches that held on the control panel then the panel is "unlocked" to permit the parameters to be modified or added to. The code may be transmitted wirelessly. The code may be transmitted in response to a user pressing a button on the token or it may be transmitted automatically.
Description
An Ooerator Control Panel This invention relates to an operator control panel for a motor drive.
It is known to provide operator control panels for motor drive in industrial machinery. Control parameters are entered by means of the panel to determine the way in which the machinery works.
It is undesirable for a non-authorised person to be able to change the parameters as this can affect the way the machinery is operated which may lead to efficiency or safety issues. The consequences of this may be severe.
According to the invention there is provided an operator control panel for a motor drive comprising a receiver for, in use, receiving an unlock signal, means to authenticate the unlock signal and in response to authentication, to permit operation of the control panel to permit input or variation of control parameters for the motor drive.
The unlock signal is provided from a user operated device remote from the control panel. In the preferred embodiment, the user operated device or token is in the form of a fob which transmits an identification code by a radio signal.
Thus, until an authenticated signal is received the control panel does not permit the use of the control panel to enter or otherwise vary the control parameters.
The token may be used to unlock one control panel or a number of panels. The transmission may use infra-red or other wireless transmissions. The preferred embodiment uses radio-frequency transmission.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in schematic form an operator control panel and a token in accordance with the invention.
As is shown in figure 1, an AC motor 1 is operably coupled to a driver 2 which controls the operation of the motor. The driver 2 is provided with an operator control panel 3. The operator control panel 3 includes a processor 4, a keypad 5 coupled to the processor for the entry of control parameters, a memory 6 for holding a program for the control functionality and the entered control parameters, a liquid crystal display 7 is also coupled to the processor 4 as is an identification memory 8. A transceiver section 9 is connected to the processor 4.
A fob 10 includes a processor 11 coupled to a button 12 and a memory 13 storing a unique identification code. The processor 11 is also coupled to a transceiver 14. When the button 12 is pressed the processor 11 responds by outputting the identification code held in memory 14 to the transceiver 14. The transceiver 14 then transmits a signal bearing the code which is received by the transceiver 9 of the control panel.
The transceiver 9 of the control panel obtains the code from the transmission and passes it to the processor 4. The processor 4 compares it with the code in the memory 8 and if it is in agreement then the control panel is unlocked. A user is then able to enter or edit the parameters of the control panel using the keypad 5 and the LCD 7.
The fob and control panel are programmed with the identity numbers in a preliminary step before commissioning. More than one operator control panel may be unlocked by the fob or token.
In some circumstances it may be convenient to avoid the need to press a button to activate the token transmission. This may be achieved by permitting automatic interrogation of fobs in the receiving range of the control panel. The token itself may use reflective modulation techniques to transmit the identification code using the RF signal transmitted from the control panel. In that way, the power requirements for the fob may be provided by the RF signal from the control panel.
Claims (7)
- Claims 1. An operator control panel for a drive for machinery which panel enabling the entry by an authorised user of operation parameters to control the machinery operation comprising memory; a receiver for receiving transmissions of identification codes from a user token remote from the panel; means to compare the identification code with a pre-stored code held in the memory and means to unlock the operator control panel in response to an agreement of the transmitted received code with the stored code to permit entry of or modification to the operation parameters.
- 2. An operator control panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the transmitted code is transmitted in a radio -frequency transmission.
- 3. An operator control panel as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the machinery is an electric motor.
