Abstract

245,286. Dryden, W. Jan. 24, 1925. Stream-cutting machines; extrusion machines. -Relates to machines in which meal for cattle food is compressed und forced through openings in a die plate, the extruded portions being cut off to length by a knife which is stationary when the die rotates, and is rotated when the die is fixed. According to the invention, the ends of the die openings remote from the compression means are closed during a part of the compressing action, being opened again a certain time or distance interval before the operation of the knife so as to cut off pieces of uniform length and to regulate the degree of compression. In a machine in which the meal is extruded through openings a', Fig. 1, in a fixed die plate A by a rotating worm, a closure plate D having a sector d cut away is mounted on the end of the worm shaft to rotate with the worm or to be driven at any desired speed by suitable gearing. The knife E is secured by screws e<2> to an inclined facing on the plate D and forms one edge of the gap d, the other edge d<1> being formed by a piece D' secured to the closure plate by screws d<2>. The angle of the gap may be varied by using making up pieces D' of different sizes, thereby regulating the length of material cut off, and its degree of compression. In a machine of the kind described in Specification 237,944, in which meal is extruded from the interior of a rotating ring G through openings g<1> by an eccentrically mounted compression roller H, the closure plate D<2> is a section of a cylinder and is secured to a fixed part of the machine by bolts d<6> passing through elongated slots d' to permit angular adjustment between its edge d<8> and the line of contact h between the ring G and roller H. A fixed knife cuts off the extruded portions. An extension D<3> of the plate D<2> may be provided, this extension being spaced apart from the ring G a distance equal to the desired length of the moulded pieces. In a modification the extension may be so shaped that its distance from the ring G starting from the edge d<8> gradually increases.
