Abstract

A liner for a receptacle to receive waste such as cigarette ends and chewing gum, is in two separable parts 4, 5. The two parts may mate with one another so as to be able to slide relatively to one another to facilitate emptying of the liner and to enable complete access to the interior for cleaning purposes. A central partition flange may project from one of the parts to form two separate compartments. Part 4 may be replaced by a modified part 4A; Figure 4, which is upwardly extended to close the waste input aperture of the receptacle. Preferably, the liner is combined with a housing forming the receptacle itself and is especially adapted to fit around at least part of an upright such as a lamp post, the rear part(s) being suitably contoured for that purpose.

Description

LINER FOR A RECEPTACLE TO RECEIVE WASTE
AND A RECEPTACLE INCORPORATING SUCH A LINER
This invention relates to a liner for a receptacle to receive waste, especially litter such as cigarette ends and chewing gum.
The invention also relates to a receptacle to receive waste incorporating such a liner.
As a measure of public security, there is sometimes the need to seal some items of Street furniture such as post boxes. In the case of post boxes, a plate is normally clamped to the letter-receiving opening to seal it.
Generally, however, waste receptacles such as litter bins cannot be sealed and often have to be removed completely in times of raised security needs.
According to the present invention, there is provided a liner for a receptacle to receive waste such as cigarette ends and chewing gum, the liner having first and second part which are designed to be separable.
One form of first, part of the liner is designed to lie adjacent an opening in an outer housing of the receptacle and has a contoured portion to align with the opening in the receptacle to allow waste material to be placed into the liner.
Another form of first part may be so shaped as to present a wall to block and thereby close the opening in the housing when mounted therein, to prevent material being placed in the receptacle.
The two parts may mate with one another.
A lower portion of the first part of the liner may have a contour to allow passage of a part of a lock mechanism associated with the housing of the receptacle.
The second part of the liner may have a similar contour at a lower, in use, portion to accommodate part of the lock mechanism.
The second part may be provided with two upright walls each having a flange inclined towards the other flange and the first part of the liner may be provided with mating flanges so that the first part may be slid into and out of the second part.
One of the parts may be formed with a flange along a lateral edge to define a base of the liner.
One of the parts may be provided with a centrally- :.:: located flange extending parallel to the outer flanges to divide the volume defined by the two parts so that two * separate compartments are formed, for example to receive cigarette ends in one and chewing gum in the other.
The liner and its housing, forming the receptacle itself, may be contoured to fit about a lamp post or other upright. Two such housings with liners may be placed back-to-back around an upright such as a lamp post.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle to receive waste incorporating the present liner, Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the liner, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the liner with one form of first part, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the liner with another form of first part.
The drawings show a housing 1 of a receptacle to receive waste having a hinged door 2 and incorporating an inner liner 3 formed of a first part 4 and a second part 5.
The surfaces of each part which form the interior volume of the liner 3 may be provided with non-stick capabilities to facilitate the removal o especially eIQ * 25 chewing gum.
The parts 4 and 5 mate with one another by meanth of corresponding external flanges 6, 7 enabling one part to slide relatively to the other part in a separable manner.
The lower region of both parts 4 and 5 have an arcuate form to allow the passage below the liner of a locking mechanism forming part of a lock 8 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows that the housing 1 is provided with a plate 9 designed for stubbingout cigarettes, which plate lies adjacent an opening 10 in the door 2 of the housing. This plate 9 may be of a replaceable type.
Figs. 2 and 3 show that the first part 4 of the liner 3 has a deep arcuate portion 11 matching the contour of the opening 10 in the door of the housing 1.
The other form of first part 4A shown in Fig. 4 on the other hand, has a wall which, when mounted in the housing 1, occludes the opening 10 in the housing 1 and this part 4A can be substituted for the part 4 at times of heightened security, for example.
The part 5 has a lateral flange 5A forming the base of the liner 3 when it is assembled.
The or each part of the liner 3 may be provided with feet (not shown) to maintain stability of the liner within the housing 1 and a spacer plate (not shown) can be provided within the housing for location purposes on the lamp post or like upright, the spacer plate being provided with drainage holes to allow drainage of water :c:::v down the upright to flow down inside the housing and out through the bottom of the housing to minimise corrosion problems. it will be appreciated that various sizes of spacer elements can be provided to accommodate various diameters of lamp post, etc. In another form, the first part 4, 4A of the liner 3 may be incorporated in the door 2 of the housing 1, to mate with the second part 5 when the door is closed.
/ Grip means (not shown) may be provided to facilitate removal of the liner from the housing.
/ It will be appreciated that the first part 4, 4A of / 5 the liner, since it is separable from the second part 5, / may be used to act as a scraper to clear the inside surface of the part 5, and vice versa.
It will be appreciated that an advantage of the split-liner arrangement is that one of the parts can be slid out to enable complete access to the interior of the liner for cleaning purposes. * 0 * ODe
