Abstract
A receptacle for waste, especially litter such as cigarette ends, has a housing 1 with a waste-insertion opening 2 and a liner 6. The liner 6 may be changed from a first in-use position (Fig. 1) to a second, sealed position (Fig. 2), where the opening 2 is closed by the liner to deny access to the receptacle. Such closure can be useful, for example, in the case of raised security. A second waste-insertion opening 3 may likewise be closed in the second position. Movement between the positions may be by unlocking a lock (10, Figures 4 and 6), lifting the liner, turning it through 180 degrees about a vertical axis and dropping it down again. The liner may comprise a plate 6A for stubbing out cigarettes. A lid 7 may be joined to the liner. The housing may have means 4, 5 for mounting to an upright such as a lamp post.
Description
RECEPTACLE TO RECEIVE WASTE
This invention relates to a receptacle to receive waste, especially litter such as cigarette ends and chewing gum.
As a measure of public security, there is sometimes the need to seal some items of street furniture such as post boxes. In the case of post boxes, a plate is 0 normally clamped to the letter-receiving opening to seal it.
Generally, however, waste receptacles such as litter bins cannot be sealed and often have to be removed is completely in times of raised security needs.
According to the present invention, there is provided a receptacle to receive waste, especially litter such as cigarette ends, the receptacle comprising a housing and a liner within the housing, the housing having an opening to receive the waste and the opening leading into the liner; wherein the position of the liner is arranged to be changed from a first, in-use, position, where the opening in the receptacle is open to accept material deposited in the receptacle, to a second, sealed position, where the opening in the receptacle is closed by the liner to deny access to the receptacle.
Preferably, the liner has a portion/plate for stubbing out cigarettes, which portion/plate lies adjacent the opening in the housing when the liner is in the first position.
Preferably, when the liner is in its second position within the housing, the liner presents a co-aligned face adjoining the opening in the receptacle housing in order to seal the opening.
A lock of the housing may be provided to secure the liner within the housing, The material of the liner may be fire-proof in order safely to receive cigarette ends.
The lock may be such that it engages a rod extending across the base of the liner to retain the liner in place relative to the housing when the lock is in its locked position.
The receptacle may be provided with means to mount the receptacle on an upright, such as a lamp post.
The portion/plate for stubbing out cigarettes may be in the form of a replaceable part.
A lid of the receptacle may be joined to the liner and may be integral with it.
Accordingly, in order to empty the receptacle, namely the contents of the liner within the receptacle, the receptacle is released by unlocking the lock and lifting the liner out of the receptacle by its lid and tipping the contents away.
In times of raised security precautions, the liner may be lifted aforesaid and turned through, e.g., 1800 that the erstwhile rear face of the liner now confronts the opening in the housing in order to seal the opening in the housing and therefore to seal the receptacle, with the liner again being locked in position.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a receptacle to receive waste, especially litter such as cigarette ends, the receptacle being shown with its liner positioned to receive the litter, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the liner in a reversed position so as to seal the opening in the housing, Fig. 3 is a front view of the receptacle showing the housing in its opened condition, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line A-A of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a side view of the receptacle in its normal, in-use condition, Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken along line B-B of Fig. 5, Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing the receptacle with the liner closing the opening in the housing, Fig. 8 is a sectional view on line C-C of Fig. 7, Fig. 9 is a front view of the receptacle in its closed, out-of-use condition, arid Fig. 10 is a sectional view on line D-D of Fig. 9.
The drawings show a receptacle with a main housing 1 having an opening 2 to receive litter such as cigarette ends. A subsidiary opening 3 may also be provided.
A mounting bracket 4 is provided to mount the receptacle on a lamp post or any other supporting upright. Means 5 may be provided releasably to secure the receptacle on the upright.
A liner 6 is mountable within the housing 1.
The liner 6 is closed at its top by a receptacle lid 7 fitting flush with an up perimeter when the liner 6 is in place within the housing 1.
The liner 6 is provided with a portion such as a plate GA upon which cigarette ends may be stubbed out.
As will be seen, the liner 6 has an upper end 6C which deviates inwardly from its general peripheral form and is provided with its own opening GD to allow material put into the receptacle through the openings 2 and 3 to drop into the interior of the liner.
The liner 6 has a base 6E, below which a rod 8 extends, the rod 8 being integral with the liner 6. The purpose of the rod 8 is to be engaged by a hook 9 of a lock 10, the lock 10 being operable to move the hook 9 between a position in which is engages the rod 10 to a secure the liner with its lid in place in the housing 1 and another position in which the hook 9 is clear of the rod 8 to enable the liner 6 with its lid 7 to be lifted clear of the housing 1.
The liner 6 is provided with an upper strengthening plate 11.
In times of need to raise the security precautions, the receptacle can be sealed by simply unlocking the liner 6 to release it, lifting the liner and twisting it through 1800 (in the example illustrated) and dropping the liner again back in place to be locked in position by the lock 10. As can be seen in Figs. 7 to 10, the erstwhile rear surface in the upper region of the liner 6 is now presented to obstruct the openings 2 and 3, thereby preventing anyone from placing any objects into the receptacle.
