Abstract

Kitchen bin comprises bin (5) recessed section (15) and lip (12) that accommodates collar (6) connected to bin (5) and lid (7) by a double hinge (10, 11), finger grips (8, 9) provided on collar (6) for opening lid (7), complementary corrugations (13, 14) provided on recessed section (15) and collar (6) for positive liner retention. Bin can be used as a kitchen stool when lid (7) is closed.

Description

Combination kitchen bin/stool
Kitchen bins in general are of light construction. Unsuitable by strength, size or shape to be used as a stool. Loose fitting removable tops incorporating various openings, such as swing tops that restrict access to the bin, are prone to be dislodged from the bin during use. Many bins are too small in capacity. Many resist compaction of rubbish due to the lack of a securely retained plastic bin liner. Usually and inconveniently, the complete top has to be removed to access the interior of the bin.
This invention has been devised to provide a bin that is made robustly enough to serve a secondary function as a kitchen stool. It does not require the removal of the top components in order to easily insert and positively retain the plastic bin liner. It also allows full access to the bin for ease of use and facilitates heavy compaction of rubbish. In so doing increases capacity and enhances function and economy.
A kitchen bin/stool in accordance with this invention comprises a bin with an open top having a recessed section and lip around its outside wall at the top. This accommodates a close fitting collar and attached lid.
The collar and lid are integral to the bin via a double hinge along the bottom back edge of the collar to the back recessed lip of the bin and the top back edge of the collar to the back edge of the lid.
This allows the easy insertion of a plastic bin liner which is positively held in place when folded over into the recessed section of the bin and the collar then closed. The bin lid is thus enabled to be opened and closed independently of the collar.
The plastic bin liner is positively retained, when the collar is closed, by horizontal co-acting complimentarily positioned inward and outward corrugations. These are located on the inside of the collar and outside of the recessed section of the bin on all four sides.
The kitchen bin/stool is preferably made from plastic materials. However, other materials can also be used. For example, sheet metal, stainless steel, wood or fibreglass. This invention may be better understood with reference to the illustrations of embodiments of the invention which:-
Fig. 1 Is a front perspective of an improved kitchen bin/stool with components closed.
Fig. 2 Is a rear perspective of an improved kitchen bin/stool with components closed.
Fig. 3 Is a rear perspective of an improved kitchen bin/stool with the component parts in the fully open position.
Fig. 4 Is a front perspective of an improved kitchen bin/stool with the collar closed and the lid in the independent open position.
The bin 5 shown with its recessed section 15 and lip 12 accommodates the collar 6 which is integral to the bin 5 via hinge 11. The lid 7 is integral to the collar via hinge 10. The collar 6 and lid 7 can be opened independently by finger grips 9 and 8. An alternative to 9 and 8 may be effected by small prohn ding flanges in the same positions.
With the bin fully open (Fig. 3), a plastic bin liner can easily be inserted and the top edge folded back over into the recess section 15. The somewhat tightly fitting collar 6 is then closed and the bin liner's positive retention is effected by means of horizontal inward 13 and outward 14 corrugations which extend around all four faces of inside collar 6 and outside faces of recessed section 15 whose complimentary positions engage co-actively when collar 6 is pressed down.
The lid 7 is then independently able to be opened or closed and when closed becomes a robust kitchen stool.

Claims

The claims defining the invention are as follows :-
1. A kitchen bin comprising a bin with an open top, having a recessed section and lip around its wall at the top, which accommodates a close fitting collar which is integral to the bin and the lid via double hinges at the back of the bin.
2. A kitchen bin as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inside faces of the collar and outside faces of the bin's recessed section walls, have horizontal co-acting complimentary corrugations which allow for tight retention of the bin liner when the collar is pressed down into place.
3. A kitchen bin according to any claims 1 and 2 wherein bin is made from plastic materials.
4. A kitchen bin according to any claims 1 -3 wherein bin is robustly made to have a secondary function as a kitchen stool.
5. A kitchen bin substantially as herein before described with reference to figures 1-4 of the accompanying drawings.
